Pakistan's Airborne Early Warning and Control Aircrafts

chinese are developing KJ-700 for Y9 and KJ-3000 for Y20
maybe something similar on a bombardier with KJ-700 arrays
No it' will be fitted to "a" ac already on the termac at noor khan afb.
But then again they might decide not to....as already we have quite a few awacs
It just shows us all that some time all the bad things that happen to us have a silver lining n a huge positive....that one incident where were lost awacs then our engineers were able to recover n make the ac air worth n certifiable by saab...who had declared them lost.
It gave our eng. Insight n a skill set which has made saab beholden to the PAF.

In 2006, Pakistan signed a contract with the Chinese firm “Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC)” for the development and construction of 4 AWACS airplanes, with the code name ZDK-03 Karakoram Eagle, to be delivered in 2008. Their name comes from the acronym of the constructing firm and reads as “Dian Zhong Ke”, while the number “3” represents the third AWACS airplanes acquired by that firm, with the other two being KJ-2000 andKJ-200.

In the beginning of 2006, China was already carrying out tests of the ZDK-03, based on Y-8 aircraft. The first official presentation took place in November 2010 at the Shaanxi Aircraft Company facilities, while at the beginning of 2011, the aerial tests of the system started, from both sides. The deliverance of the first plane (s/n 11-001) to the Pakistani side was done on November 2011. The second and third aircrafts were delivered in December of the same year.

This order from Pakistan was the first successful contract for a 100% Chinese airborne early warning system. Indeed, all the electronic system, the AESA radar including and the fast processing CPUs, were Chinese made.

Subjects on show in AVIC’s hall included large-scale mockups of the J-20 and J-31 and the company – along with CATIC – was promoting both the ZDK-03 and upgraded KJ-500 AEW&C aircraft.

According to a Chinese source, the China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC) has allegedly been unable to provide the required maintenance, repair and overhaul for the PAF’s fleet of ZDK-03s. While CETC is a systems integrator company, CATIC is now responsible for the upkeep of these aircraft.

True, the service from OEM, reliability, periodic upgrades, that PAF is accustomed to from western suppliers, for whatever reason, in this particular case, was a serious let down.

The difference in performance between the ZDK-03's and the Saab (non-ER) AWACS was a generation apart as well.

Re-purposing the a/c's into other platforms was seriously explored, but shelved for the time being. They just might re-appear in another shape, with a sister service.

What a stupid decision to get the awecs if they were going to be shelved so early
