Bauer doesnt say NATO is ready to a total war with Russia. He says NATO support is inside intl law, and it will keep there.
He says that any state attacked (Ukraine) has right to defend itself in any part of the enemy land (Russian soil).
Just common things, already known.
If NATO doesnt attack Russia, Russia has not right (in international law) to attack NATO.
Putin and Medvedev threats against NATO are out of law. Likely because it's only threat, and they never dare to fulfill it.

Think of it like this, they have Tu-160s that is more advanced in every single way but old bear is still just that good and upgraded there is no point in scrapping instead of upgrading. Also it's use as missile carriers is genius, anything can drop dumb bombs but how many Other missiles, X-101, and X-102 Nuclear .kinzhals or other missiles Tu-95 can pack with it's range is why bear stays.
