16 September 2025

Saudi Minister of Energy, Chairman of the Board of King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy, and Chairman of the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz said on Monday the Kingdom was forging ahead in developing its nuclear program.

Speaking at the 69th session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna, he stressed: “Given the importance of nuclear energy in socioeconomic development, the Kingdom has moved towards utilizing nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.”

“The Kingdom, in cooperation with the IAEA, is continuing to implement its national nuclear energy project in all its components, including the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Saudi Arabia, to achieve multiple objectives: contributing to the diversification of the national energy mix, enhancing the security of supply chains, and advancing sustainable development,” he went on to say.

These efforts are being pursued in line with the Kingdom’s national requirements and within the framework of international obligations, he added.

The Kingdom is committed to ensuring its national program promotes knowledge and technology transfer and supports the development of national human and technical capabilities in line with international best practices, said Prince Abdulaziz.

The minister further noted that Saudi Arabia has completed the essential administrative preparations to rescind the Small Quantities Protocol in cooperation with the IAEA and has fully implemented the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement, as of early 2025.

Moreover, he said the Kingdom underlines the importance of strengthening nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness and response capabilities at the national and international levels.

International cooperation and knowledge-sharing boost the effectiveness of the nuclear and radiological emergency response systems to ensure people’s safety and environmental protection, he remarked.

The minister praised the IAEA’s efforts, under the leadership of Director General Rafael Grossi, to advance initiatives that support member states in building national systems, developing human capabilities in nuclear technology, and bolstering oversight of nuclear and radiological practices.

The conference underscores the agency’s key role in advancing international cooperation to harness atomic energy for peace and sustainable development, he noted.

Looking ahead, Prince Abdulaziz announced that the Kingdom will host the International Conference on Nuclear and Radiological Emergencies in Riyadh from December 1 to 4. The event will be organized by the IAEA.

Reaffirming Saudi Arabia’s investment in human capital, Prince Abdulaziz stressed that investing in national talent is key to maximizing the benefits of peaceful nuclear applications.

He underlined the Kingdom’s cooperation with the IAEA in supporting programs that develop and equip young professionals in the nuclear field to support national goals and achieve sustainable development.

The minister also highlighted Saudi Arabia’s support for the IAEA’s efforts to encourage member states to join multilateral nuclear safety agreements, noting that the Kingdom recently hosted a regional workshop in Riyadh to promote the Joint Convention on spent fuel and radioactive waste management in collaboration with the IAEA.

Prince Abdulaziz reiterated the Kingdom’s determination to deepen cooperation with the IAEA and advance the peaceful use of atomic energy in support of national development goals and in line with international obligations.

I will do that the next time around but I believe that there is a translation function on Twitter already. However it makes sense to translate it.

Essentially to make it short, the tweets showcased various academic achievements by Saudi Arabian students in the West (male and female alike) as well as achievements in various science competitions and Olympiads as well as the pioneering achievements of certain Saudi Arabian scientists. It was mostly news from this past month as well to showcase people the strides that KSA have and is taking in terms of education and human capital. Strides that are often completely unknown for outsiders.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Also I need to address one of my favourite topics close to my heart. The agricultural sector keeps increasing and expanding and KSA is aiming for/reaching self-sufficiency on numerous fronts in this regard. The contribution of the agricultural sector in 2024 was an estimated 31.4 billion USD.

On most rankings KSA is now largely self-sufficient in terms of meat, fruits, vegetables, seafood, dairy, eggs etc.

That and obviously the ambitious "Green Arabia/Saudi project" and goal of planting 100's of millions of trees if not billions. I think that I covered this particular topic earlier in this thread back in either January, February or March when I was last active on this forum.

Also a pressing topic given the global climate challenges. Restoring much of the lost forests and greenery is also an admirable and great goal by itself. Much has been restored already and in fact much of the degradation is caused by overgrazing (throughout centuries) and human stupidity (cutting trees for firewood) and in general past ineffective practices.

For this very reason animals such as lions (that roamed KSA for millennia and have an enormous symbolic meaning for Arabs and in Arabic language), cheetahs and other wild animals died out in the past 200-50 years.

If nature is rehabilitated and restored the reintroduction of those animals could occur much like how the Arabian Oryx and Arabian Leopard was saved and given that KSA has enormous areas of territory that are/have been made into national parks/protected areas and in general the wilderness in KSA which is everywhere outside of populated areas, such goals could be reached and would help the ecosystem overall, tourism, local as well as foreign, the climate, decrease temperature and in general be a benefit.

Positive news, apparently 4 cheetahs were born in KSA in the wild (national park), I was not aware of this but this is great news.

40 years ago they became extinct in the wild in KSA apparently.

An Island the Size of a City #Shura Icon #Red_Sea_Destination for luxurious eco-tourism, stretching over an area that exceeds some cities around the world, turning a single island into an experience that rivals entire cities with its beaches, facilities, resorts, activities, and pristine nature.

The size comparison is with Monaco which is 2.5 times smaller.

Absolutely stunning to see the combined GCC wealth just in terms of sovereign wealth funds. Nobody close if combined.

The rise of the PIF (approaching 1 TRILLION USD within the next few weeks, if not already) in such a short time span is crazy.

That is excluding trillions worth of assets/investments home and abroad let alone natural resources within the country.

We need to use this wealth in a clever way to strengthen KSA, the Muslim and Arab world as a whole.

Allocate 100 billion USD over the next 10-15 years on the Pakistani military sector in order to create joint military projects. Need of the hour.

A good overview of some of the ongoing giga projects in KSA.

The Kingdom’s total number of mega-projects has surged from just 64 in 2010 to 476 by 2025, placing it among the top three countries globally in terms of volume.

The report, titled The Future of Major Programme Delivery, defines mega-projects as those valued at $1 billion or more, while giga-projects are classified as projects worth $10 billion or more.

Saudi Arabia currently shares second place with India for the number of giga-projects, with each country hosting 43 such developments. The United States ranks first globally, with 88 active or completed giga-projects.

Overall, the United States tops the rankings for combined mega and giga-projects with 1,663, followed by India (729), Saudi Arabia (577), and the United Kingdom (484). The United Arab Emirates ranks seventh with 233 projects.

Not bad.

In terms of tourism:

A quote from the article:

In the first quarter of 2025, Saudi Arabia stood out as the nation with the highest increase in international tourism revenue globally. This growth reflects not only a determined strategy to diversify the economy through large tourism projects, but also an effort to strengthen its presence and alliances on the international stage.

Record high in international tourism

According to the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) World Tourism Barometer, published in May 2025, the Saudi kingdom experienced a 102% increase in international tourist arrivals compared to the same period in 2019. This percentage far exceeds the global average of 3% and the regional average of 44% in the Middle East, consolidating Saudi Arabia as a key player in the global tourism sector.
Later this week or so I will try to cover the ongoing giga-projects in Makkah and Madinah. Once finished they will completely transform Hajj and Umrah.

Chinese solar firm SoleFiori (Hongjun New Energy) has signed an agreement with the Saudi Arabian government to build a 6GW heterojunction technology (HJT) module production facility in the country.

The deal was signed at the recent “Beijing-Saudi Arabia Advanced Manufacturing Conference” hosted by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources and the Federation of Saudi Chambers of Commerce.
Under the agreement, SoleFiori will jointly build a 6GW high-efficiency HJT module production base in Saudi Arabia with the Saudi ministry. The base will adopt SoleFiori’s technology and production processes, focusing on the research, development, and production of high-efficiency HJT modules.

SoleFiori claimed that its HJT modules feature minimal power degradation in high temperature and high bifaciality, making them particularly suitable for PV application scenarios in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

On June 30, Saudi Aramco, in cooperation with Shandong Electric Power Construction Company, a subsidiary of China Power Construction, held an official ceremony at the site of the King Salman International Integrated Port project, on the occasion of the completion of ground engineering work for the project, which is considered the largest in the world in the category of "Giant shipyards".

Upon completion, the port aims to provide construction, maintenance and refurbishment (MRO) services for commercial vessels, including cruise ships, bulk carriers, marine support vessels and drilling platforms, which will enhance the Kingdom's capabilities in the field of marine engineering.

To date, the project has set several world records: as the world's largest shipyard with an area of 11.25 square kilometers. With a 2,100-ton bridge crane, it is the highest in the world. In addition to the ship lifting system, it is the largest in the world, with a capacity of up to 25 thousand tons. The pier is the longest in the world, extending over 7 kilometers.

When fully operational, the project is expected to contribute approximately US$17 billion to the Kingdom's GDP, create nearly 80,000 jobs, and reduce dependence on imports by up to US$12 billion. The project is a pioneering model of cooperation within the Belt and Road Initiative between China and Saudi Arabia, and a pivotal contribution to the industrial and maritime development of the Kingdom.
