"With the
Block 3 making waves globally thanks to its
KLJ-7A AESA radar,
PL-15 integration, and
electronic warfare upgrades, the arrival of
JF-17 Block 4—code-named
PFX-Alpha under Pakistan’s experimental fighter program—isn’t just the next iteration. It’s a transformation.
The
JF-17 Thunder Block 4, aka
PFX-Alpha, isn’t another marginal upgrade. It’s a
lethal transformation — a
true 4.5++ generation multirole fighter with 70% indigenous systems, AESA jammers, integrated IRST, smart avionics, and locally made
Faaz missiles. It’s not competing with Tejas (because let’s not punch downward). Instead, it’s being positioned as
Pakistan’s modern-day F-16, only smarter, cheaper, and more adaptable.
F-16 gave us wings. JF-17 Block 4 will give us claws.”
— A senior PAF official (anonymously at IDEX 2024)
With J-10C potential second order in pipeline as no major PAF asset acquisition stays less than 3-5 squadrons historically - The one real thron was financial freedom.
With Saudis entering into a military pact with Pakistan, there seems to be a ray of light for future inductions as well as development of PFX as a program - starting from MLU of Block - II into AESA - PL-15 equipped asset to Block -IV moving to the end product which may ultimately be a KAAN with PAF modifications & munitions and a non US Engine.
For an airforce which is at cross roads with an option to choose tip of spear from Chinese J-35AE as a stand alone purchase to Tukiye's KAAN with a reasonable share in assembly - the real question looms about the future of PAC Kamra and JF-17 Project.
The question directly relates to which platform would eventually become the work horse in decade 2030 - 20240 which could fill in numbers yet support a 5th gen fleet limited in numbers."
