The Evolution of PAF's JF-17 Thunder through OCU [Operational Capability Upgrade] - News, Updates, Possibilities & Discussions.

@Deino When do you want to start betting that the people will claim PFX will get rolled into the SAC J-XX/J-50 and the PAF will get it by 2029?
What’s to bet that someone in PAF was AWARE of the J-XX series prior to the public unveiling…

However in this case - I would surprised if this is anything beyond a few days CFD simulation worth at best or at worst some image taken off the internet

"With Chinese taking major strides towards most advanced 6th Gen Assets strictly reserved for their applications & limited detail of capabilities available .

The cooperation with Pakistan Airforce in Manned Aerial Platforms & related domains - which are now NOT the most cutting edge for them may be jointly explored.

Potential areas could be progress in JF-17 IIIP, PFX Alpha & J-31/35 EA seems likely ."

JF-17 Alpha , PFX & J-31 Programs Plus China's 6th Gen sightings - A Nightmare for IAF

"Indian Air Force (IAF) chief AP Singh has raised concerns over China's astonishing pace of air force modernisation while expressing frustration over the sluggish pace of the delivery of Tejas jets.

1736457585472.png

Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, the chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF), voiced serious concerns regarding the escalating militarisation by neighbouring countries China and Pakistan during his address at the 21st Subroto Mukherjee Seminar on Tuesday. His comments come in light of China's recent unveiling of two sixth-generation stealth fighter jets, a move that has heightened global apprehensions about Beijing's military advancements.

Hindustan Aeronautics-Indian Air Force Defence deal

  • Indian Air Force signed the deal with Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) for 73 Tejas Mk 1A aircraft with advanced features, and 10 LCA Tejas Mk-1 Trainer aircraft (total of 83) under Rs 46,898 in February 2021. It is probably one of the biggest ‘Make in India’ defence contract till date.
  • HAL now has begun delivery of 83 Tejas Mk-1A in the March 2024-Feb 2028 timeframe.
  • It is the first “Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)” category procurement of combat aircraft with an indigenous content of 50% which will progressively reach 60% by the end of the programme.

What’s new in Tejas MK-1A?

  • A digital radar warning receiver
  • A superior AESA (active electronically scanned array) radar
  • Advanced beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missiles
  • External self-protection jammer pods
  • Air to Air Refuelling (AAR)

"We should go back to 1984, when we conceived that aircraft. The first aircraft flew in 2001, 17 years later. The induction started another 15 years later, in 2016. Today, we are in 2024. I do not have the first 40 aircraft also, so this is the production capability," the IAF chief said, underlining that "technology delayed is technology denied".

Raising concerns over India's neighbour's astonishing pace of military modernisation, the IAF chief said, "As far as China is concerned, it is not just the numbers, even the technology is growing at a very rapid pace. We just saw the recent flight of the new generation fighter that they have pulled out."

Russian President Vladimir Putin's highly-anticipated visit presents New Delhi with a golden opportunity to further strengthen its defence and strategic ties with Russia, including making a bid to acquire the Sukhoi Su-57 5th-gen fighter jet to upgrade IAF's aging fleet.

Its being speculated that Vladimir Putin may Su-57 as part of a larger defence deal and the two nations may also explore the possibility of co-manufacturing the 5th-generation warplane under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. India can see it as a stop gap move due to delays in Tejas & AMCA and recent announcements by Pakistan Airforce for an OCU for JF-17 named PFX Alpha with an induction of 5th Gen J-31AE Planned already.

PFX 04.jpg

While China is obviously the most advanced aerial power in Asia, India’s other south Asian rivals, including Pakistan, and more recently Bangladesh, have begun initiatives to boost their aerial power in the region. Recently, China, who already has a fleet of over 300 5th-gen fighter planes, recently unveiled the world’s first sixth-generation stealth fighter.

At the same time, Pakistan is engaged in a frantic race to outmatch and outgun India in aerial firepower, that includes measures like modernizing the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and acquiring latest 5th generation fighter jets, such as J-35 stealth fighter from China. According to reports, the PAF has inked a deal to acquire 40 J-35 fighter jets, which will be delivered within the next two years.

J-35.jpg

The AMCA prototype is expected to take another four to five years for its maiden flight, with production slated for after 2035

Notably, Russia is India’s largest supplier of defence equipment, accounting for nearly of the country’s arms imports, and the two countries have previously collaborated on the production of Su-30 fighter jets."

Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA)

"
The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) stands at a very interesting juncture in its history. For the first time, it is equipped with a qualitative edge at considerable scale. And at the same time, it has hundreds of still-capable airframes coming up for a potential retirement. The confluence of these factors provide the PAF with an opportunity to make a leap forward that could redefine its capabilities and global standing.

With a current fleet that includes over 180 BVR equipped JF-17s, nearly 75 F-16s, and 36 J-10s, the PAF already has a sizable high-end force. The launch of the PFX (Pakistan Fighter Experimental) program and announced future acquisition of J-31 stealth fighters will further strengthen Pakistan’s air defense capabilities for years to come. However, the true measure of an air force’s strength lies not just in new acquisitions but in its ability to seize the initiative, innovate and maximize the potential of all its assets.

U.S. Air Force’s CCA program aims to develop unmanned aircraft that can operate alongside manned fighters, bombers, and other assets. These aircraft are expected to perform a variety of missions, including:

  1. Serving as loyal wingmen to manned aircraft
  2. Conducting independent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions
  3. Electronic warfare and jamming
  4. Serving as weapons trucks to extend the range and payload of manned aircraft
  5. Acting as decoys to confuse and saturate enemy air defenses

GJ-11 Loyal Wingman.jpeg

Lets review the progress made by China & India :

China has unveiled a new unmanned aerial system (UAS) designed to operate in tandem with its advanced fighter jets.

Showcased at the recent Zhuhai air show in southern China, the Feihong FH-97A is capable of leading swarms of smaller drones or acting as a companion wingman for Beijing’s stealth fighters, such as the J-20.

It can reportedly support “confrontational, high-intensity, and long-lasting” combat, thanks to its enhanced weapons bay for both air-to-air and air-to-ground munitions.

“The FH-97A drone meets the four [major] trends in the development of weapons: it is unmanned, miniaturized, intelligent, and stealthy,” Shanghai-based military analyst Ni Lexiong told Financial Times.

In addition to serving as a drone wingman, the Feihong can be catapult-launched from aircraft carriers to support maritime operations.

Despite its promising capabilities, several defense analysts believe it will take at least five years before China deploys the FH-97A at scale.

“In the future, [the FH-97A] will be extremely important. The future of war will be competition between drone and anti-drone technology,” Ni stated.

======================

A full scale replica of India’s first-ever semi-stealth drone, now under development, is being showcased at Aero India, the mega air-show which kicks off in Bengaluru later this week.

The drone, called Warrior, is part of an indigenous programme called CATS or Combat Air Teaming System, described as “a composite amalgamation of manned and unmanned platforms which work together to penetrate heavily defended enemy airspace.” In simple terms, the Warrior drone is being designed to operate with an Indian-made Tejas combat aircraft flown by an Indian Air Force pilot, which it will defend and fight with as they go into combat together.

The first Warrior prototypes are expected to fly within three to five years and is being funded by Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL).

HAL reveals the Loyal Wingman – Warrior, parts of the CATS(Combat Air Teaming System) at Aero India.
1737176896987.png
“Multiple Warriors will be commanded by a single Tejas,” said a source close to the project. The idea is to maximise the effectiveness of every mission while reducing the potential of losing the lives of precious pilots since they would be accompanied by the drones which would protect them. “The Warrior is being armed with air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles,” which would be used to hit targets on the ground or in the air.

The Warrior, while not an out-and-out stealth platform, which would allow it to evade being picked up by radar, is classified ‘low observable’, which makes its detection challenging for contemporary systems.

At the moment, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, which has been working on drone warfare concepts for more than five years, is working towards the design, development and integration of key subsystems of Warrior. The Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy, the eventual users of the platform, will need to re-shape their operational philosophies around the concept of ‘combat-teaming’ to effectively integrate the use of a manned and unmanned platform.

The Hunter drone is a part of a series of new designs which are in the process of being designed and developed. This includes the Hunter cruise missile, designed to hit targets more than 200 kilometres away and a swarm drone system called ALFA-S designed to hone in on multiple targets which it identifies through artificial intelligence and machine-learning technology which allows the weapon to discriminate between possible targets.

Manned-Unmanned Teaming

A sign of the PAF’s interest in UCAVs was the reference it made to manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T). The PAF did not reveal how it will build MUM-T capabilities, but one can reasonably see it using the wider industry’s general direction as its reference point

PAF NASTP - GIDS nexus with Turlish companies could mean Leveraging tech to develop this tech instead of assembling a manned fighter jet program.

1737177868084.png

For PAF Designing, constructing, and flying these UCAVs that are approaching manned fighter jets in complexity will give PAC valuable experience and build the human resource and infrastructure that it is currently lacking. Embarking on this program will build the foundations on which PAC will become capable of designing and building large parts of a manned fighter jet, as is the vision under PFX Alpha or JF-17 OCU."
