According to the Turkish main opposition leader, it's her Deep State that's at the helms. And, Erdo'an heads the Deep State too....I don't think this current operation have anything to do with the Kurd, otherwise these group would not be going South and West, but they will be going East. This operation is quite clearly focus on Assad and Syrian Arab Government.
Many middle eastern analyst said this is a payback for Assad ignoring the Turks (Erdogan to be precise), and Turkey support this to push the buffer zone further South. I don't see how the HTS can push all the way down toward where the American were. Nor complete roll over of all SAAF zone.
On the other hand, I also don't see how US want to get in with this either. That does not mean they are abandoning the Kurds in the East, Turkey and the US probably have an agreement where can they go and where can't they go. But what happen afterward is everyone guess.
