Because they caved, perception can and will be built against Establishment Dems by the Modern Dems. They will be primary-ed all across the country.
Btw, looks like maybe able to add Katie Wilson in Seattle to the count of dem wins across the nation:
Remember what I said about Mandani and how the Democratic establishment is unwilling to embrace him, I mean, they don't need to embrace his socialist ideology, but they need to embrace him and what he was running for. This is about that, at least this is what I think.
There is no possible reason to cave now, especially in this way, when they got nothing in return (a December vote is a joke, and they probably aren't going to do another shutdown when this senate bill expires on January 31, 2026.)The only way it makes sense is for them to try to pull the Democrats back into the Centrist left, which is where this Democratic establishment is.
I am a centrist myself, and I will say ending the shutdown makes sense, but as a casual observer to politics, Democrats are not going to win anything by staying centrist; people need change; that's why they ditch the more "moderate" brand of either ideology and go for Populist. Which means doing this now will only flush out all centrist within the Democratic party, or the GOP will gain more support from this by dem voter staying home.
There was a video from NBC (Not MSNBC) I watched last night, they were comparing the generic vote after the shutdown, and every time Democrats cause a shutdown, they gain preference DURING the shutdown and lose preference AFTER they cave. It went up to 8 points during the shutdown, and we had seen the election result from it. Usually, after they cave, they will hold the lead, but it will be significantly less. 2026 will be a strange race, either Dem have to fully surrender to more left-leaning, more progressive, like you said, people are going to support a more progressive candidate during the next Primary, or they are going to lose out to the Republicans, because Democratic supporters are going to stay home.
