Michigan Republican Unseated After Losing to Democrat by 20 Points

Story by Kate Plummer. 8h

A Republican county commissioner has been unseated in Michigan after losing to her Democratic challenger by 20 percentage points in a recall vote.

Chris Kleinjans won an Ottawa County election on Tuesday with 60 percent of the vote share, while the Republican incumbent Lucy Ebel lost, having gained 40 percent.

The county election comes as Michigan is a key battleground state in November's presidential election. Former President Donald Trump won the county with 61 percent of the vote in 2020. He also narrowly won the state in 2016 before losing it to President Joe Biden in 2020.

Newsweek contacted the Michigan Republican Party by email outside of normal business hours to comment on this story and will update if there is a reply. Read more

Trade unionists will always cheer for the incumbent. Why risk earning the ire of someone who may get back in office ?
Biden has positioned himself as a pro-labor leader, and he has gotten strong backing from labor unions. Labor unions back politicians who advocate for policies that benefit workers, such as minimum wage rises, collective bargaining rights, and workplace safety regulations.

The usual pandering to the latest powerful group

In my perspective, unions are as flawed as capitalism, but equally important. Two of the most powerful forces in the economy are corporations and labor unions. The struggle between them is sometimes framed as a zero-sum game. When one side wins, the other loses. However, a balanced approach is required for a just and prosperous society. When both sides thrive, everyone benefits. Workers earn higher earnings and benefits, corporations become more productive, and the economy grows stronger.

The jury is still out on whether the new contract agreements between the United Auto Workers (UAW) and Detroit's Big 3 major automakers will succeed.

So far, one positive result is that Tesla, Volkswagen, Honda, Subaru, Toyota, Hyundai, and Nissan have all increased worker pay following the UAW successful negotiation of new contracts with Detroit's Big 3 automakers.

Since the UAW union ratified new contracts with the Big 3 on November 20, 2023, their stocks are also up.

Robots will replace auto workers. Unions is irrelevant.
