The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Tuesday said overseas workers’ remittances were recorded at $3.5bn in January, increasing by 11.3 per cent during Jul-Jan of the current fiscal year (FY26).

“Cumulatively, with an inflow of US$23.2 billion, workers’ remittances increased by 11.3 per cent during Jul-Jan FY26 compared to US$20.9 billion received during the same period last year,” said SBP.

“In terms of growth, remittances increased by 15.4pc on a year-to-year basis,” the central bank said.

It elaborated that the remittances in January were “mainly sourced” from Saudi Arabia ($739.6 million), the United Arab Emirates ($694.2m), the United Kingdom ($572.1m) and the United States of America ($294.7m).

Remittances in December rose to the highest level of FY26, reaching $3.6bn, largely driven by continued incentives for sending money through formal channels and relative stability in the exchange rate.

Currency experts believe remittance growth this year is weaker than in FY25. They cite concerns over a “managed” exchange rate, suggesting some inflows may be diverted away from official banking channels.

Pakistan is among the top countries receiving large foreign exchange inflows through remittances. While a growing number of jobseekers leaving the country is termed by some economists as brain drain, the government considers it beneficial for the external balance.

Last year’s record inflows of $38bn helped partially repay external debt, boost SBP reserves, stabilise the exchange rate and post a current account surplus after more than a decade.

Overseas Pakistanis need to boycott remittance and also stop any
investment in Pak until the mandate of the people is respected by
the Duffers in GHQ.
I have been sending money in an indirect way (mostly) since last year. I have someone here who needs money, and I normally swap with him.
It is hard to stop remittance. Perhaps, if everyone can be convinced that we should stop celebrating occasions and spend less on events.

There are a lot of people in need in Pakistan. I don't agree with stopping remittances or charitable contributions because of politics.

very important, shows no economic progress on the ground

the more this news is celebrated, the less there is in the economic system to celebrate

it is a sign of decay and a dead system

Wreck the Pakistani economy because a 'just another idiot' asked us to? No thanks.

Why is it a "shame"?

It's money coming into Pakistan at the end of the day, and it belongs to Pakistanis.

Because this means that Pakistan's exports are far below where they should be.

true. A lot of families and relatives struggling for pretty much many of overseas Pakistanis like us.
The only thing is, life here is becoming expensive too, so it may have a downward incline if people have difficulty sparing funds to send back home.

With extreme shortages and very expensive gas and electricity/hydro in Pakistan, its not a surprise that industry and factories and manufacturing has been severely affected, but our kanjar leadership pretends all is well. In reality the duffers in charge can only beg IMF. Nothing else is working.
People have lost jobs in many sectors.

seems now country is dependent on remittances to keep it from bankruptcy?

The elites are not interested to reduce their perks and benefits for doing f all.

The government has changed the rate to 11 Rs/unit for purchasing, while selling is 88 Rs/unit.
So, users with solar panels and green meters cannot get the same units out of it.
Nonetheless, we are still paying capacity charges as the contract has international binding.

this is why people should go completely off-grid, using multiple Batteries if possible.
Having an off-grid solar system is the best, bcaz hybrid and net-metering is now dead because of the mafias of private IPPs who want to mint money.
They couldn't tolerate people having 0 bill amount to pay due to credits.

The solar panel contract went to NS's elder son, and now the imported battery one will go to him, too. The issue is that the government took back net-metering without any debate.
People started buying panels, thinking the net metering would remain. Now, after enough sales, they took it back. While the entire country pays capacity charges if it has a meter.
If we go all in like solar panels + battery and no meter, the government will take that away by some draconian law or without it.
