Mumbai Suburban Rail is having a decent makeover very soon..what do you mean "rest of the subcontinent"? A majority of trains in India are still very below par. It starts with capacity management : we have probably the largest commuter and event-travel base yet most commuter and event capacities are a fraction of what they should be.
Is the Mumbai suburban train fit for use by anyone other than very strong youth? The crush has been unchanged for decades now.
Is there a single event for which public can seamlessly reserve and travel in comfort? A large fraction of them are invaded by unreserved ticket holders making travel with family hellish
Except the highly staffed and controlled Vandhe Bharat trains, is there any one train that you can use the toilet without stopping breathing ?
Is there one railway police or guard that will take responsibility for keeping the station safe or the compartment clean ?
This has nothing to do with poverty. We lack sense of hygiene , and we lack personal integrity
AC locals and Non AC ones with locked doors. ( Not much but won't be a death trap at least !).
