Iran allocates $500m budget to space program

"He further noted that a $500 million budget will be allocated for the development and progress of the space industry, $150 million of which has been earmarked already"

not clear over what time period this will be, but great news in any event - that's a serious budget for a serious space program. @Hack-Hook do you know? I would guess $500m is over 5 years since those are the government development intervals.

Russia to send two Iranian satellites (Kowsar-2 and Hodhod) into orbit in May-June 2024

"The construction of the Kowsar satellite took 4 years," Aghili highlighted, "and with the experience gained from this satellite, we were able to build the Hodhod satellite in one year."

Aghili added, "Currently, these two satellites are in the assembly testing phase."

He added, "We conducted a test phase in Russia with the hope that these satellites would be launched in Azar of the current year, but the launch was delayed. If it is supposed to take place in Khordad (May-June) of next year, once again, in Ordibehesht (April) of next year, we will assemble the satellite in Russia and perform the necessary tests."

Kowsar-2 is an imaging satellite with 3.5m resolution and Hodhod is a IoT cubesat.

Russia is also due to send Khayyam-2, Khayyam-3 and Khayyam-4 satellites into orbit over the coming years.

100-150M a year is not a “serious” budget for space with manned program intentions. 500M/yr is somewhat ok for a country the size of Iran strictly limited to satellite launch capability of civilian sector.

Space program budgets of other countries:
India is at $1.5B+/yr
Japan is at 5B/yr
South Korea at 700M/yr
Italy and UK each at 1B+/yr

Given Iran’s program is the expansion phase and not maturity phase (SLV design still ongoing, space port construction, etc) . More funds should be allocated ideally at least 1-2B per year especially if we plan for manned space program and a lunar program in the distant [distant] future.

you must also consider budget for qaem and noor sats come from somewhere else

That is military sector.

I said civilian sector. And those micro sats are not high in cost, MIT students could build those for fun. Come on now.

100-150M is paltry number for a large space program. No matter what cost savings iran gets for being a developing country with lower labor and production costs (not always).

No wonder this program is going so slow. With such funding it’s no surprise.


Meanwhile Iran probably gets $150M of equipment bombed in Syria a year by Israel.

That won’t make economic sense till Soroush. All of Iran’s current SLVs are relatively cheap <$3M and the engine tech for first stage isn’t worth it.

The reason why the West retrieves is due to the high cost of each launcher and to expedite mission launch time. Plus the engine tech is expensive.

It would be fairly easy for Iran to attach a parachute deployment system to 1st stage plus some thrusters like seen on K-4 missile warhead to allow the 1st stage to safely land in the massive desert region for retrieval.

I believe a large portion of p/l is turnaround time. Parachuting the vehicle will prolly incur damage also. All in all, cost savings is in frequency.

No, it should slow it to sufficient speed, after all how do you think the Mars rovers land on Mars?

Right now some firms are trying instead catch it in the air with helicopter (dangerous) or a splashdown in body of water.

However, water is dangerous for the electronics and salt water is corrosive. So it remains to be seen the viability of that endeavor.

Lastly, there is SpaceX return to launch pad. The most expensive of them all.

Iran neither currently has the launch schedule demand nor the sophistication of payload to warrant a faster turnaround time and p/l profit increase
