Azerbaijan Air Force Becomes Fourth Operator of JF-17 Fighter Aircraft, President Aliyev Confirms

Azeri President website confirmed that Azeri airforce is getting JF-17 Block IIIs. Later confirmed by Pakistan as well.

What's not confirmed is that how many aircrafts and contract value. There is no official confirmation of rumors of 1.6 B USD contract. It could be just an estimate by fan club. There is no confirmation on number of units and cost. So let's avoid getting into rumors for this.

Neither Azerbaijani, nor Pakistani official statements say anything about JF-17B. Only JF-17C Block 3.

PAF video released yesterday said: A contract has been signed for the sale JF-17 Block 3 to Azerbaijan

And Azerbaijani press release only mentions JF-17C (Block 3):

“JF-17C (Block-III) multirole aircrafts presented to President Ilham Aliyev”
Let's wait and see what happens. How will their pilots convert to the JF-17.

As crows fly, that is very impressive range. We can easily "fiddle" in middle east if it comes to that.

I think peeps missed on one very important detail. There is bravo in the formation :).
The flight path shows Pakistan can form an "air bridge" to AZ, avoiding Iran, should the need rises. IMO a message has been delivered.....

According to the Turkish strategic analyst, Ardan Zenturk, AZ has made a smart JF-17C choice by showing her strategic autonomy vis-a-vis Russia and the West.....

Elhamdulillah. The BAF will join this club Insha'Allah....

There is no incentive for single engine Fighter procurement as of now. If we ever going to get one, it will very likely be J10C. (As shown in BAF 'future plan' poster during MHD-2024) Ongoing procurement program is MRCA.

The question of President only mentioning block 3 and leaving out JF-17 B is honestly irrelevant. The statement would look odd "we bought block 3 and JF-17 B from Pakistan". Political statements are meant for public consumptions, not technical and detailed in their nature.

Also we all know that it was said that Bravos were built on expected architecture for Block 3 (kind of block 2.5) so its possible that those Bravos going to Azerbaijan will in fact be block 3. Also we know from PAFs own experience its not strictly necessary to have Bravos to train your crews.

Also why single engined is an issue - reinforcing what I mentioned earlier.

Considering Ukraine has found a way to Jerry rig Western munitions on their Soviet origin fighters, will the Azeri JF-17 be able to also field Turkish weapons without having to share the radar/avionics codes with the Turks or the Turkish munition codes with the Chinese?

Azerbaijan buys JF-17 fighter jets from Pakistan

Baqir Sajjad Syed Published September 27, 2024 Updated about 23 hours ago

ISLAMABAD: Azerbaijan has added JF-17 Block III fighter jets, purchased from Pakistan reportedly in a $1.6 billion deal, to its air force fleet.

“The jets have already been integrated into the arsenal of Azerbaijan’s Air Force,” Azerbaijan’s presidency said in a statement after President Ilham Aliyev was formally presented with the multirole aircraft at Heydar Aliyev International Airport on Wednesday, during a ceremony attended by Defence Minister Zakir Hasanov.

At the ceremony, which took place on the margins of Azerbaijan International Defence Exhibition 2024 in Baku, Air Vice Marshal Hakim Raza, Chairman of the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex Board, briefed President Aliyev about the fighter jet’s cutting-edge tactical and technical specifications, operational guidelines, and key performance indicators.

President Aliyev was photographed sitting inside a JF-17C Block III fighter jet.

Besides inspecting the aircraft, he witnessed an aerial demonstration, which showcased the agility and manoeuvrability of the fighter jet.

The Inter Services Public Relations, in a statement released on Thursday, said “a contract for the sale of JF-17 Block-III fighter aircraft” to Azerbaijan was signed recently.

Azerbaijan has become the third country to acquire JF-17 fighters from Pakistan after Myanmar and Nigeria. It has long been speculated that Iraq is considering the purchase of JF-17s from Pakistan.

It is believed that the agreement was inked during February this year. The ISPR said that Azerbaijan president, during his visit to Islamabad in July, was “briefed on the combat capabilities and versatile employment options” of the fighter aircraft.

It said that President Aliyev had on that occasion hailed the deal saying it would “go a long way in consolidating the existing military cooperation between Pakistan and Azerbaijan, fostering closer defence collaboration”.

Reports in Azerbaijan media had claimed that the aircraft were acquired under a $1.6bn deal for unspecified number of jets, armament, and training.

JF-17 Block III, developed by Pakistan Aeronautical Complex and China’s Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group, boasts advanced avionics, including an Active Electronically Scanned Array radar and long-range missile capabilities.

The lightweight, single-engine fighter is designed for air-to-air and air-to-ground operations and is known for its high manoeuvrability at medium and low altitudes.
