The recently published first book on the J-20 program: J-20 Mighty Dragon: Asia's First Stealth Fighter in the Era of China's Military Rise highlights that the J-20B “included a much flatter cockpit canopy with a distinctive low-profile appearance blending into the fighter’s raised spine and a nose radome with slight geometric revisions. The changes appeared intended to improve its aerodynamic performance and further reduce its RCS, with the enlarged spine also expected to accommodate more fuel or possibly new avionics.” By far the most significant known change to the new variant, however, is its engine. Regarding the WS-15, the bookJ-20 Mighty Dragon notes that compared to previous engines the new powerplant boasts a “much higher thrust/weight ratio estimated at 10:1 or 11:1, require less maintenance, improve thermal management properties, and have a significantly longer service life. Its cutting-edge single- crystal turbine blades, although proving particularly difficult to mass produce, were expected to almost double the engine’s lifespan compared to the WS-10B while significantly lowering maintenance needs.”

The WS-15 was first seen integrated onto the J-20 in single configuration for a test flight in January 2022, and was subsequently first flown in twin configuration in June 2023 - namely on prototype 2052. The American F-22 that entered production in the 1990s notably lacks use of modern composite materials in its airframe and uses avionics widely considered obsolete, while the Russian Su-57 was designed to prioritise reduced production and operational costs and lacks key features such as distributed aperture systems seen only on the F-35 and J-20. Where the F-35 which was developed with a single engine to reduce lifetime costs at the expense of a far inferior flight performance in all parameters, the J-20’s twin engine design will with the WS-15 be a close contender for the title of the fighter with the world’s top flight performance. The engines allow supercruise at high speeds, possibly at Mach 2, while providing the fighter with more thrust than any other in the world. Their much greater power generation capacity will also allow the J-20 to use a much more powerful avionics suite and could potentially power directed energy weapons in future. The discrepancy in performance is only expected to grow due largely to the United States Air Force’ recent cancellation of plans to develop an enhanced engine for the F-35 under the Adaptive Versatile Engine Technology program, after previously also cancelling the promising F136 engine.

No it is not, much exaggerated and a lot of either unproven and speculative details presented as proven facts and he gets the designations wrong!

Lol lots of speculations with no proofs and backups, and adaptive versatile engine technology program is intended for NGAD from day one,and f136 is more complex and risky engine project then F135-PW-100 project which is based on proven F119 technology

There has been some speculation that J-20's WS-15 could each generate 180kN of thrust with a T/W ratio of 11.

If that is true that would be absolutely freaking insane and allow it to supercruise at Mach 2.

With WS-15 and all its highly modern systems, this may be the best air superiority fighter now on the planet bar none.

Pls dont break super-22, hyper-ngad what ever fanboys heart, a certain IM might give you a ban. Pretty sure about usa unassailable over capacity 6th gen printing tech. NOBODY even come close.

Size of flanker heavier then F-22 can't supercruise at Mach2, has larger RCS then F-22 because of canards and ventral fins as well as WS15 is not treated to reduce RCS so far? And F-22 gets recently has avionics upgrades

And NGAD will see the future ultimately whether what the world says about it, it's underconsinderation according to the USAF security NGAD is not dead

The point is, no-one denies these reports, but we have barely any proof. As such to state this all as facts and even more to belittle the F-22 is at best naive or in worst case dangerous!

All the years I'm following the scene and writing stuff on that matter I learnt one thing: It's always better to be careful and writing "Based on unconfirmed reports, the J-20 has a Ga-Ni AESA radar installed, its body/fuselage comprises a large percentage of modern composite, it features an IRST, and combined with efficient aerodynamics, and now a (much) more powerful engine, and an avionics suite more modern than the 20 years old F-22 (nearing its retirement age, and built with 1980 tech) there is a good chance, the PLAAF has finally a fighter on par with the most capable US fighter. Experience count but you're not believe in Experience didn't you and your 80 to 90 % airforce is based on Russian/Soviet designs rest of your PLAAF is based on EU designs lol think before you post crap

What experience let compare Lougheed Martin built F35 and it is a turkey! 14 or 15 dropping from the sky. Even today F35 is not operational and has a poor availability record of only 50% Recently US Air Force accepted F35 with the condition that they will make the software update work That is big iffy! All in all, it is a disaster over budget, late beyond help, and still more problems cropping up every day. J20 has an excellent record no known accidents so far and kept updated with better avionic, engine, and availability. Now mass-produced at 100 copies a year.

The point is again; You take any negative reporting in an exaggerated form for the FF-35 to portray it as a total disaster, which surely isn't correct in the same way you portray anything positive for the J-20 and the absence of anything negative for proof it might be the current epitome of aerial warfare, which again is naive and dangerous.

Excuses, excuses, Do you think China has no problem transitioning to a new jet fighter? You guys keep bringing up memes of copying. Now who is the biggest copier? The US brought a truckload of German scientists, rocketeer, and aerodynamicists to help them with the design project. lookup operation paper clip

Comeon you know that lack of kinematic performance means that the F-35 cannot really be compared to either F-22 or WS-15 J-20.

Yes it may be better than 4th generation fighters by some distance but should not really be put at the same level as either of those 2 absolute beasts.

A lot of people would not even put F-35 as a 5th generation fighter due to inability to supercruise.
