Chinese market will be a make or break for German automakers. Market share for Western Auto are currently at 35 percent from 60 percent a few years back. Chinese market is not for the weak.

GM will lose its crown soon Tesla is still alive because of branding alone but still inferior to byd cause they can barely make any batteries while byd has full in house supply chain.

Established in 1958 by FAW Group, Hongqi is China’s oldest luxury car brand. It initially served high-ranking officials and dignitaries. Early models like the CA72 and CA770 gained prominence in the 1960s and 1970s. Production ceased in 1981 but was revived in the mid-1990s. Hongqi has expanded its lineup to include modern luxury sedans and SUVs.

The 2024 Hongqi H6, part of this modern lineup, comes in five trims, priced from 179,800 to 239,800 yuan (approximately 24,800 to 33,000 USD). The 2024 model retains its design and powertrain while offering upgraded features.

Exterior Design

The 2024 Hongqi H6 is a medium-sized sedan with dimensions of 4990 mm in length, 1880 mm in width, and 1455 mm in height and a wheelbase of 2920 mm. It runs on 225/50 R18 tires with optional red Brembo calipers and features a stylish sliding sunroof.

At the front, the H6 is distinguished by a large grille adorned with matrix elements and a narrow, luminous vertical Hongqi logo, which stands out mainly at night. The vehicle’s rear features an electric tailgate, through-type taillights, a slightly upturned ducktail spoiler, and a center-mounted dual exhaust system. The doors produce a tinny sound when closed, hinting at a lighter, less robust construction.

The Interior

Inside the H6, the two-tone cockpit layout remains unchanged, featuring a 12.6-inch central control screen, a 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel, and a flat-bottom steering wheel. The entire series now has the Hongqi 3.0 Plus intelligent network system, offering voice control, recognition, and customized navigation. An optional advanced driving assistance package is also available.

The H6 has many features, including 253-color ambient lights, tire pressure monitoring, front and rear parking radars, cruise control, keyless entry, one-button start, heated external mirrors, and integrated sports seats. Unfortunately, a lot of hard plastics are used on top of the dashboard.

Storage

The trunk offers a substantial volume of 592 liters.

Driving Experience

The 2024 Hongqi H6 delivers a controlled and responsive driving experience thanks to its well-engineered chassis. The suspension system, particularly the CDDC adjustable damping on the higher trim, is finely tuned, allowing the car to adapt between firm, sporty handling and a softer, more comfortable ride.

In sport mode, the high-output 2.0T engine provides immediate power delivery, making it easy to merge onto highways or pass slower vehicles. The steering is sharp, with a direct feel that gives the driver precise control, while the chassis remains composed even during spirited driving. The sedan’s size doesn’t compromise its agility; it feels planted and responsive through corners. However, tire noise was very noticeable even at lower speeds, which may dampen the driving spirit.

Switching to comfort mode, the H6’s suspension softens, effectively absorbing road imperfections and providing a serene ride, especially on longer journeys or rough city streets. The interior remains quiet, with minimal wind noise, contributing to a relaxed driving environment.

Advanced driver assistance systems, like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance, function smoothly, reducing the strain on the driver during extended drives. The flat-bottom steering wheel feels substantial, and the sports seats offer firm support, ensuring the driver always feels connected to the car. Meanwhile, the infotainment system and climate controls are easily accessible, enhancing comfort for all passengers.

The H6’s 2.0T engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The standard engine produces 185 kW and 380 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds, with a 6.55L/100km fuel consumption. The car’s top speed is capped at 230 km/h.

Safety Features

The 2024 Hongqi H6 offers an optional Advanced Driving Assistance Package that enhances safety and convenience. Standard features include front head and side airbags for collision protection, tire pressure monitoring for optimal safety, and front and rear parking radars to assist with parking and obstacle avoidance. Keyless entry provides secure and convenient access to the vehicle, while heated external mirrors improve visibility in cold weather. The integrated sports seats offer comfortable seating with lateral support. Red Brembo brake calipers are optional to enhance braking performance.

Dealership Experience

I went to Hongqi’s official website to make a reservation. We received a call to confirm the booking in the afternoon. As I arrived at the Hongqi dealership at noon, I was greeted by the Hongqi rep who had contacted me earlier. Surprisingly, I was offered a complimentary lunch at their staff canteen before the test drive. After lunch, a test-drive specialist assisted with our test drive. The experience at the Hongqi dealership was very straightforward and enjoyable.

Conclusion

The Hongqi H6 is a medium-sized sedan that combines practicality with performance. The 2024 model updates its design and driving dynamics, appealing to those interested in Hongqi’s distinctive style. However, the dashboard materials and noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) levels need enhancement. Compared to competitors like the BYD Han or the more affordable Lynk & Co EM-P 07, the H6 feels outdated and overpriced. Improvements in interior material quality and NVH levels are needed to compete with more contemporary and affordable alternatives to broaden the H6’s appeal.

Stay tuned for next week’s Sunday China Drive at Car News China, where you can read more first-person evaluations of Chinese cars.

The vehicle’s dimensions are 4825 mm in length, 1980 mm in width, and 1620 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2940 mm. The rear design returns to a more traditional SUV look, albeit with a smaller rear window and sleek, narrow taillights that maintain high visibility.

Inside, the Avatr 07 offers a tech-focused cockpit with a unique four-screen setup, including a 35.4-inch 4K display, two 6.7-inch electronic side mirror screens, and a central Huawei intelligent control screen. The interior is designed with premium materials, including Nappa leather seats, Alcantara headliners, and natural wood accents on the center console.

The vehicle also features the newly introduced Taihang Intelligent Control Chassis, equipped with dual-wishbone independent suspension, smart air springs with four adjustable modes, and a CDC dynamic damping system capable of 100 adjustments per second. The Avatr 07 also has Huawei Qiankun ADS 3.0, LiDAR, parking assistance, upgraded urban navigation capabilities, and a new collision avoidance system.

Avatr, a Chinese automaker established by Changan, Huawei, and CATL, continues to expand its model lineup. The Avatr 07 targets a competitive mid-sized SUV segment against Model Y, BYD Song Plus, and the new Zeekr 7X.

On August 30, Hedin Mobility Group in Stuttgart, Germany, announced it had reached an agreement with BYD to sell its German distribution network for the brand. This effectively means that the German Branch of BYD, known as BYD Automotive GmbH, will now control the rights to distribution and spare parts of the BYD brand within the German market.

The transaction is an agreement for Hedin to sell its subsidiary Hedin Electric Mobility GmbH, the appointed Dealer+ of BYD vehicles and spare parts in the German market to BYD. Also covered as part of the agreement is the transfer of two pioneer stores in Stuttgart and Frankfurt, which are currently operated by Hedin Mobility Group’s German retail division, to BYD’s control.

The agreement does not, however, sever Hedin’s Connection to BYD fully. The company will remain an authorized retailer of BYD in Germany with three sales points in Mannheim, Kaiserslautern, and Saarbrücken. Furthermore, Hedin Mobility Group will continue to act as Dealer+ and retailer in Sweden.

“Over the past two years, we have worked with BYD to develop the German market. The foundation is now in place to scale up volumes, and we look forward to continuing this journey in Germany together with BYD as a dealer,” said Anders Hedin, CEO & Founder of Hedin Mobility Group.

The deal empowers BYD’s position in the German market. Now acting as the distributor, BYD can enter into more agreements with dealer networks across Germany, expanding the company’s footprint around the country. Equally, by controlling the spare parts arm, BYD will be able to ensure that the customer experience is fully under the company’s control with regard to service and maintenance of cars sold.

“BYD is committed to fostering strong long-term partnerships. The existing partnerships with the German retailers will continue. Together with its retail partners, BYD will further extend outstanding customer services and warranty support in Germany,” said Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD Company Ltd.

The transaction is subject to regulatory approval and will likely be finalized in the fourth quarter of 2024. BYD sold 4,139 BYD cars in Germany last year, but as of the end of July, it had sold just 1,432 cars in 2024. An obvious motivator behind the deal is to try to expand sales at a faster rate.

An all-new Changan CS75 Plus, which was previously code-named C928, was officially unveiled at the Chengdu Auto Show on August 30. Although some sources claim that the new car is the fourth generation Changan CS75 Plus, it is really just the second generation, as all the previous three cars were fundamentally the same car that originally debuted in 2019. Unlike the previous facelifts, this is an all-new car and has been comprehensively upgraded in terms of exterior, interior, and power. The new car is expected to launch in September.

At the front, the new car has a very imposing grille with lines that echo the V-shaped symbol of the Changan logo. Running down the sides are huge light clusters, and an LED light strip runs across the whole top of the grille.

Overall, the car plays it quite safe when it comes to design, following fairly stereotypical SUV lines. At the rear, it has a through tail light design punctuated by the Changan logo. The rear spoiler comes down lower than might be expected, and the rear windshield doesn’t seem that big. The new CS75 Plus is significantly larger than its predecessor. This is perhaps most noticeable with the wheelbase, which is now 2800 mm compared with 2710 mm for its predecessor. Length, width, and height are 4770, 1910, and 1695 mm respectively.

Inside, the car has a triple screen design, which takes up most of the dashboard space. Both the LCD instrument panel and the entertainment screen for the front passenger are smaller than the central infotainment screen, although they fit into one housing, which drops lower for the central screen. The drive selector is now located on a steering wheel column-mounted stalk. This move frees up space on the center console, which now has a dual wireless mobile phone charging pad, two cupholders, and a cubbyhole. The multi-function steering wheel has a flat bottom design. Top spec versions gain heating, ventilation, and massage functions for the front seats, which are also zero gravity, meaning that they can recline.

Like all previous versions of the CS75 Plus, the car will initially come as an ICE only. It is powered by a new Blue Whale 1.5T engine, which provides maximum power of 141 kW and a peak torque of 310 Nm. This is coupled to an eight-speed automatic Aisin transmission. The Changan CS75 Plus has L2 driving assistance, which provides functions such as lane-keeping assistant, and APA 5.0 valet parking, which includes a parking memory function.

The Changan CS75 Plus is one of China’s best-selling SUVs. Sales in 2023 were around 244,800 units, and so far in 2024, the car is the fourth best-selling SUV. However, it has not been exported widely, and this could be one of Changan’s aims with the all-new car. It is likely that a PHEV version will be launched in the future.

Nio topped the J.D. Power 2024 China New Energy Vehicle Customer Experience Value Index (NEV-CXVI) Study, which was released on August 29. In a vindication for the approach of the Chinese EV startups both Li Auto and Xpeng also scored highly. Reportedly, it is the sixth consecutive year that NIO has topped the chart.

J.D. Power, in the survey, separates the brands into domestic and international. It should be noted that Nio scored higher than any other brand, domestic or international. The customer experience value index is created by looking at the customer experience of NEV owners between two and 12 months of ownership. The study measured the purchase stage across six categories (in order of importance): customer follow-up (19%); information collection (17%); delivery (17%); showroom experience (16%); purchase plan (16%); and product experience (14%). The measures for the usage stage are (in order of importance): customer equity (34%); customer service (33%); and energy service (32%). The measures for the service stage include service process (37%); service quality (34%); and initiation (29%).

For the domestic brands, Nio scored 798 out of a possible 1000, securing first place. Li Auto gained second with 791, and Xpeng third with 788. It should be noted that Zeekr, GAC Aion, and BYD all scored above the segment average of 771.

In the case of the international brands, Mercedes Benz won with a score of 789. Tesla clinched second place with 787. Meanwhile, the segment average was 776, with Audi and BMW both performing below this level, along with many other well-known producers.

Nio, Li Auto and Xpeng, all top the J.D. Power NEV customer satisfaction survey. Mercedes also does well in China.
Overall, the study shows a small increase in satisfaction, with a score of 772 compared with 770 in 2023. However, there are variations in the individual categories, and these show that although there have been significant increases in satisfaction with the purchase and service experiences, there is a decline in the usage experience, mainly related to charging issues.

This survey shows that, in general, NEV owners are more demanding and that in order to satisfy them, online communication is essential. For example, the survey claims that customers who interact with brand or dealership staff online before visiting a store will visit the store 3.6 days earlier than those who do not have such interaction. For those who interact with brand representatives, they have a satisfaction score of 800, and for those who Interact with dealership staff, the score is 781, whereas those with no interaction have a satisfaction score of just 746.

Similarly, once the person has purchased a vehicle, they expect maintenance and repair issues to be dealt with promptly. If an issue is not resolved in a single visit, satisfaction drops by 74 points. The cleanliness of the vehicle after visiting the dealership is also a key point. Where the car emerges with the same level of cleanliness as before it entered the service point, satisfaction is 756; however, where it emerges cleaner, satisfaction jumps to 803.

Although the use of brand apps for booking maintenance or repair appointments does not have a particularly high penetration rate, it has risen significantly from 2023 levels and now accounts for 16.1%, up from 11.1%. Perhaps more importantly for brands, creating engagement using the app seems to result in the customer spending more money. Customers who use the app daily spend, on average, 212 yuan (30 USD) more per person on after-sale services than those who do not use the app daily.

The biggest pain point appears to be charging. Overall satisfaction with energy services has declined to 777, a nine-point decrease from 2023. The lowest satisfaction is scored for brand specific (777) slow charging points and third-party public charging (753). J.D. Power reports that problems with public charging stations have increased to 44.6% this year, up from 31.6% in 2023. The problems appear to be centered around a lack of charging stations, poor facilities and discrepancies between actual conditions and online information. Presumably, the latter relates to situations where a user turns up to find that the supposedly empty charger is either occupied or out of service.

The study was conducted between April and June 2024 across 81 major cities in China. It consisted of 8,733 new energy vehicle owners who purchased their vehicles between April 2023 and April 2024 and covered 53 brands.

BYD has finally unveiled its newest minivan, BYD Xia. It is a sizable MPV with a 5.1-meter length and the 5-gen DM plug-in hybrid system on board. It will enter the market this year with a starting price of 300,000 yuan (42,300 USD).

The BYD Xia was previously rumored to be called Tang Max or Zhou. However, BYD has decided to call it after the Xia dynasty. It is the oldest dynasty in traditional Chinese historiography, established in 2070 BC. By calling their minivan Xia, BYD expressly stated it is the flagship product of its Dynasty series.

More about the BYD Xia

The exterior design of the BYD Xia has its own distinguishing style with a large trapeze-shaped grille. Otherwise, it follows the BYD’s Dragon Face design language with a chrome-plated element and elongated headlights in the front. Another feature of the Xia MPV is the BYD inscription in the front end. Other Dynasty series cars adopt Chinese hieroglyph logo in the front.

The overall proportions of the BYD Xia remind us of the Denza D9 minivan (see specs). It has a flat roofline, rear sliding doors, and a roof spoiler. From the back, the Xia has a single taillight LED strip. The dimensions of the BYD Xia are 5145/1970/1805 mm with a wheelbase of 3045 mm. It is 105 mm shorter, 10 mm wider, and 115 mm lower than the mentioned Denza D9.

The interior of the BYD Xia wasn’t officially revealed. But we’ve previously covered spy shots of its cabin. It adopts a seven-seat interior with a 2 + 2 + 3 layout. Its center console stays in line with other recently launched BYD cars like the Qin L sedan or Song L DM-i crossover. It has a large suspended screen and a D-shaped steering wheel.

5-gen DM system and more

The BYD Xia will adopt the DiPilot ADAS system and the DiLink 150 cockpit system. Its suspension adopts a DiSus-C electromagnetic system with adjustable softness. BYD Tang and Han adopted the same system. However, it seems the Dynasty series’ flagship minivan won’t get the DiSuS-A air suspension.

The powertrain system of the BYD Xia minivan adopts the 5-gen DM hybrid powertrain. Most likely, it will adopt the 1.5-liter turbocharged BYD472ZQB engine with a peak power of 115 kW (154 hp). This engine matches with a 200 kW (268 hp) electric motor. There is a possibility the BYD Xia will be available with 4WD. It was previously disclosed that the BYD Xia has an all-electric range of 200 km, which indicates it has a large LFP Blade battery on board.

The BYD Xia will enter the Chinese market this year with a starting price of 300,000 yuan (42,300 USD). Later, it can enter the overseas markets.

JAC Group disclosed its 2024 mid-year financial results. During the first half of the year, JAC achieved a net profit of 300.83 million yuan (40 million USD) from its subsidiaries, representing a 93.84% increase from last year.

According to previously released production and sales reports, the company sold 206,200 vehicles. Sales of JAC new energy passenger vehicles increased by 15.28% year-over-year.

JAC Group history

JAC Motors passenger cars on display
JAC Group (or JiangHuai Automobile Group), based in Hefei, was established in 1964 and celebrated its 60th anniversary this year. The company historically produced commercial trucks and started producing passenger vehicles in 2007.

More recently, the company is known for manufacturing the first models of Nio cars. JAC manufactured Nio’s first mass produced model, the Nio ES8, and subsequent models like the ES6, ES7, and ET7.

JAC’s time as an OEM for Nio ended in December 2023 when Nio acquired JAC factories manufacturing Nio vehicles, all in Hefei, for 3.158 billion yuan (440 million USD). Soon after, JAC announced a cooperation agreement with Huawei and plans to develop vehicles based on Huawei’s HIMA platform.

Recent success

JAC reported a significant increase in new energy research and development in the first half of 2024. Total investment grew by 59.75% year-over-year with R&D investments accounting for 7.74% of the company’s operating revenue. R&D investment is expected to increase in the future to around 9%.

Research investments have paid off as JAC has achieved mass production of L2 level intelligence driving for its cars. The company claims to have completed L3 level of automation and is looking to obtain a test license. JAC has also begun L4 level demos and testing internally in specific scenarios.

JAC pickup trucks
The group’s successful mid-year is partially due to its exports. JAC has exported its pickup truck line-up to over 132 countries. In 2023, JAC sold 55,000 pickup trucks with around 42,000 being exported. Popular markets include Latin America, the Gulf states, Central Asia, and Australia. The company saw a total increase of 11.3% in pickup truck sales so far this year.

JAC and Huawei

JAC has struggled in the passenger vehicle space in the past, but the company is looking to change that with its collaboration with Huawei. After first signing a cooperation agreement with Huawei in December 2023, it has been revealed in 2024 that JAC will join as the fourth member of Huawei’s HIMA auto alliance.

The JAC and HIMA joint brand is named Maextro (尊界 – Zunjie) and will compete against ultra-luxury models such as Maybach and Rolls-Royce. The brand’s first model is expected to be an MPV costing at around one million yuan (140,000 USD) based on JAC’s new energy platform called the X6. The platform will also cover sedans, SUVs, MPVs, and sport cars.

Render of Maextro’s MPV
The group has mostly completed the new 200,000 annual production facility for producing JAC-Huawei models. The first model is planned to roll off the production line at the end of this year and launched in the first half of next year.

JAC looks to be changing its strategy, moving back to focusing on manufacturing their own passenger vehicles after divesting their Nio factories. Huawei’s HIMA alliance brands have been a success story so far, but it remains to be seen if JAC and Huawei’s ambition for an ultra-luxury brand will resonate with Chinese consumers.

Xpeng unveiled its new Mona M03 electric vehicle on August 27. At the Chengdu Auto Show, Xpeng announced that within 48 hours of its release, the company had reported over 30,000 firm orders for the model. He Xiaopeng, founder, chairman, and CEO of Xpeng, personally handed over the first units to new owners.

The Mona M03 is priced from 119,800 yuan (16,900 USD). The higher-end M03 Max, featuring autonomous driving capabilities, XNGP, is expected to be available after the 2025 Lunar New Year. The vehicle boasts a low drag coefficient of 0.194, the lowest for a mass-produced electric sedan, contributing to its impressive range of up to 620 km with a 62.2 kWh battery.

The Mona M03, measuring 4780mm in length, 1896mm in width, and 1445mm in height, is designed to focus on aerodynamics and weight reduction. It features a 15.6-inch central display, and options include a 599 yuan steering wheel-mounted display. The car is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip and supports 360-degree panoramic imaging and 3D map rendering.

The model offers two motor options with maximum powers of 140 kW and 160 kW and battery choices of 51.8 kWh or 62.2 kWh. The lightweight design, with the heaviest version weighing 1739 kg, contributes to its range and efficiency. Xpeng emphasizes that the vehicle’s aerodynamic design includes features like an active air intake grille, significantly reducing drag.

The Mona M03 is seen as Xpeng’s attempt to capture a broader market by offering a competitive and affordable intelligent electric vehicle. It compares Model 3 and BYD’s Qin to its target demographic, particularly younger consumers looking for advanced, budget-friendly EVs. To lower the production costs, the Mona M03 does not have a heat pump, and it has a torsion beam rear suspension.

Xpeng’s Eagle Vision system will debut in the Max version. It features advanced driving assistance without relying on lidar. The system, which aims to provide robust smart driving capabilities, will be tested further as it integrates into Xpeng’s future models.

Xpeng aims to sell 10,000 Mona M03 units monthly and is working on additional models. Despite high hopes for the Mona M03 to boost sales, the company’s overall performance has been mixed. Xpeng’s gross profit margin increased to 14% in the second quarter of 2024, surpassing competitors like Nio. However, total vehicle sales from January to July 2024 were only 63,000, falling short of the annual target.

The Zeekr 7X debuted on cue at the Chengdu Auto Show on August 30. Deliveries in the Chinese market will begin by the end of September, and deliveries overseas will begin within a year.

Zeekr has made it clear that the 7X (see specs) has been designed very much with global markets in mind. The brand’s first midsize electric SUV measures 4825, 1930, and 2925 mm (l/w/h). Using an 800V architecture version of Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform, the car has a wheelbase of 2925 mm. It should be noted that the 7X is relatively heavy, with curb weights in the 2298 – 2475 kg range.

The 7X uses Zeekr’s Hidden Energy design language. Flowing across the front of the car is the Zeekr Stargate interactive LCD display, which can project messages and images. At the rear, the car uses a through-type tail light. Buyers have a choice of four colors: Arctic White, Dawn Brown, Nightfall Gray, and Polar Night Black. Supporting the SUV are 19 or 20-inch wheels.

A midsize SUV, it is a five-seater and is aimed at families. Given the car’s dimensions, it should be quite roomy inside. There are 32 storage compartments, conveniently storing items from sunglasses to lipstick. The trunk space is 616 liters, which Zeekr says is enough for camping.

The interior has the fairly standard two-screen layout. For the Zeekr 7X, this means a large floating infotainment screen and an LCD instrument panel, which is fully integrated into the dashboard. Powering the car’s entertainment system is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chip. The 7X has a four-spoke steering wheel where both the top and the bottom are flattened with the bottom flattened more than the top. Mounted on the steering wheel are two scroll wheels and some buttons. Unlike with previous Zeekr models the drive selector is now situated on a steering wheel column-mounted stalk rather than on the center console.

Second-row passengers benefit from airline-style tray tables that fold from the backs of the front seats. The highest spec models appear also to get rear entertainment screens. Rear passengers also gain heated and ventilated seats on higher spec versions controlled via a touch screen on the fold-down armrest. There is a non-opening panoramic roof complete with an electric blind.

Available in single-motor and dual-motor versions, all Zeekr 7X cars use a 310 kW silicon carbide electric motor on the rear axle. In dual-motor versions, a 165 kW motor is also added to the front axle, giving the car a 0- 100 km/h acceleration time of 3.8 seconds.

All versions of the SUV have 800V architecture and 75 and 100 kWh battery packs are available. The smaller 75 kWh pack uses Zeekr’s self-developed Golden Brick battery produced by Geely subsidiary VREMT. It is the same second-generation version of the battery that recently debuted in the 2025 model year Zeekr 007, and it’s a lithium and phosphate battery. Zeekr claims it is the world’s fastest charging and can go from 10 – 80% SOC in 10.5 minutes; the battery has 5.5C charging. The battery gives the 7X a range of 605 km using the CLTC measurement cycle. The 100 kWh battery pack uses a CATL-supplied Qilin battery, which is a nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery optimized for super-fast 5C charging. This gives the Zeekr 7X up to 780 km CLTC range. It should be noted that the battery options are exactly the same as those offered in the 2025 model year Zeekr 007 (see specs).

Equipped with a suite of sensors, including Lidar and using dual Nvidia Orin X chips providing 508 TOPS of computing power, the 7X should come with the same Haohan intelligent driving 2.0 system as in the Zeekr 001 and 007. Over the next few months, various upgrades will arrive, culminating in a door-to-door capability for the system in quarter one of 2025.
