The Dasu Hydropower Project (DHPP) marked a key construction milestone with the launch of the 4.8-megawatt Siglo Power Station, a dedicated facility that will support testing and commissioning for upcoming Roller-Compacted Concrete (RCC) trials on the main dam.

Member (Water) WAPDA Syed Akhtar Ali Shah inaugurated the station during his visit on Wednesday to review progress on the flagship renewable energy project. He was briefed by Project Director Amir Shafiq-ur-Rehman and senior officials on civil, electrical and mechanical works, along with challenges and solutions to meet critical timelines.

Shah later inspected major work fronts, including the dam site, diversion tunnels, intake structures and the powerhouse, before commending the workforce and reaffirming WAPDA’s commitment to delivering the project on schedule.

The latest progress follows mid-November high-level talks in Islamabad between WAPDA Chairman Lt. Gen. (Retd) Muhammad Saeed and China Gezhouba Group of Companies (CGGC) International Chairman Liu Huai Liang, where both sides agreed to accelerate construction. CGGC, the main contractor, was urged to deploy additional resources, while WAPDA reiterated full support to keep the project on track.

Located on the Indus River, DHPP is a major run-of-river scheme that will ultimately generate 4,320 MW in two stages. Stage I, now under construction, will add 2,160 MW through six units of 360 MW each, producing 12,222 GWh annually.

Under-construction Dasu Hydropower Project has a total output of 4 thousand 320 megawatts. This is Pakistan's largest pin electricity project by credibility of annual electricity production. Which will provide 21 billion units of low cost, environment friendly electricity to the National Grid annually.

First phases of the project. On completion of the second phase, the National Grid will get 12 billion units per year, while on completion of the second stage another 9 billion units of electricity.

The under construction 4320 MW-Dasu is the largest Hydropower Project of Pakistan in terms of annual energy generation; Stage-1 to contribute 12 billion units, while Stage-2 to provide another 9 billion units to the National Grid every year, thus, totalling to 21 billion units of indigenous, green, clean and affordable electricity.

DASU, Jan. 15 (Gwadar Pro) - The Dasu Hydropower Project (Dasu HPP) has achieved a major milestone with the successful commencement of tunneling work on the Shori-1 Tunnel under the Dasu KKH-02 Realignment Road Project.

Energy China Pakistan on January 14 announced that the milestone was marked by the first controlled blast carried out on December 29, 2025, formally initiating excavation of the approximately 530-meter-long tunnel.

The company said the work is being carried out under challenging geological conditions, with strict safety measures and advanced engineering techniques being applied to ensure steady progress.

The 4,320-megawatt Dasu Hydropower Project, currently under construction, is the largest hydropower project in Pakistan in terms of annual energy generation. Upon completion, Stage-I is expected to contribute about 12 billion units of electricity annually, while Stage-II will add another 9 billion units to the national grid, taking total annual generation to 21 billion units of indigenous, green, clean, and affordable

DASU - Chairman Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), Lt. General Muhammad Saeed (Retd.) inaugurated the Grid Station of the 132 kV Transmission Line at the Dasu Hydropower Project (HPP) on February 15, marking a major milestone in strengthening the project’s power evacuation system.

The inauguration ceremony was held during the Chairman’s official visit to the project site, where he reviewed ongoing construction activities and assessed overall progress.

The newly inaugurated grid station is a key component of the transmission infrastructure, designed to facilitate efficient transmission of electricity from the Dasu Hydropower Project to the national grid.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman termed the completion of the grid station “an important step toward the timely operationalization of the project” and he emphasized that the development reflects WAPDA’s commitment to accelerating work on critical infrastructure to ensure reliable and sustainable energy supply for the country.

The grid station will play a crucial role in supporting construction power requirements and strengthening the overall transmission network associated with the project. Its completion demonstrates continued progress on essential infrastructure needed for future power generation at Dasu Hydropower Project.

UPPER KOHISTAN - The Dasu Hydropower Project (DHPP) marked a key construction milestone last week with the successful breakthrough of the Uchar B tunnels, completing all seven tunnels under the Karakoram Highway (KKH-01) relocation package.

The Uchar B tunnel extends 953 meters and its breakthroughs was confirmed during an on-site ceremony attended by engineers, technical staff and project representatives, who gathered at the tunnel portal holding a banner commemorating the excavation breakthrough. Besides it, Uchar A tunnel measures 673 meters has also being completed.

Located in the mountainous Upper Kohistan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the tunnels form part of essential relocation works for sections of KKH that will be affected by the reservoir created under the Dasu HPP. The tunnels are designed to ensure continued connectivity and safe transportation in the region once the project becomes operational.

Photos from the site show engineers and workers wearing protective helmets and safety gear standing at the entrance of the newly excavated tunnel, surrounded by rocky terrain and reinforced slopes. The tunnel portal is lined with concrete support structures, highlighting the engineering measures taken to ensure stability and safety in complex geological conditions.

China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) is responsible for executing the construction works in coordination with Pakistan’s Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA).

Moreover, on Friday WAPDA through Dasu HPP released about Rs200 million to accelerate electrification efforts in Kohistan Upper.

The funds have been provided to the Hazara Electric Supply Company (HAZECO), formerly known as the Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO), for the electrification of four tehsils of Dasu.

As per WAPDA, the electrification project includes the extension of transmission lines, installation of transformers, and development of distribution networks aimed at delivering electricity to remote and underserved communities in the region.

The transmission network is nearing completion. Electrification will commence soon after HAZECO completes the distribution infrastructure. The initiative is expected to significantly enhance living standards, promote economic activity, and improve access to essential services across Upper Kohistan.
