This has disaster written all over it.

DRDO designing a totally new AIP with no past experience of SSK subs

Cutting open a foreign sub and installing it

Length and weight increases to a design that has not been validated for it

Either this project will flounder or be subject to very very long delays.

Easier would have been to let France install a AIP and let DRDO develop one and use an old Indian Submarine as a test bed.

France will not accept any liability for this project either

Deal cost submitted by France is estimated at around Rs 56,000 crores (~USD 6.7 billion) for 26 Rafales (22 Rafale M and 4 Rafale D). This may also include the cost of weapons, but this isn't clear as yet.

This is higher than anticipated, given that some of the costs of the IAF's order for 36 Rafales were into infrastructure that both the IAF and IN fleets can share (e.g. simulators, spares depots, etc.).

Dassault planning to set up a new MRO on it's own in UP to service IAF, IN and possibly Indonesian Rafales is an indication of which direction the wind is blowing.

How Dassault plans to deliver these within the usual 3 years after contract signature will have to be seen. As of now it's only possible with the set up a separate new assembly line in India. Or with French Navy asked to lease some of it's Rafale Ms till the IN can get it's brand new Rafale Ms.

What amuses me is that there are those on this forum who actually think that the IN will ask for Rafales costing billions of USD and then park them (and service them) on the deck since they can't be fit on the lift in any way. Lol. And then people take him seriously.

The Spanish S-80 Plus class submarines offer similar advanced features like AIP, modern combat systems, and stealth capabilities, but they have faced some issues and lack a proven track record. In contrast, the Type 214 submarines are known for their reliable AIP and lithium battery combination, non-magnetic hull, and established performance. Type 214 submarines are in regular supply and have been successfully exported to multiple countries, including Greece, South Korea, and Turkey.

Rahman said the tkMS platform will be tailored to meet the Indian Navy’s requirements, its angular design will make it stealthy, and a new lithium-ion battery system (instead of lead-acid battery) will be installed on board to give the submarine greater dived endurance at higher speeds.

“A combination of AIP and lithium-ion battery will enhance the operational capabilities of the submarine,” he said.
