PTDI Expands Rocket and Integrated Weapons Development Through Strategic Partnerships
JAKARTA —
PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) has strengthened its commitment to advancing Indonesia's indigenous defense industry through a series of strategic partnerships announced during the
Indo Defence 2024 Expo & Forum in Jakarta.
The agreements aim to accelerate the development of advanced rocket systems, guided munitions, and integrated weapon platforms while increasing local technological capabilities and domestic industrial participation.
Strong Foundation in Rocket Technology
PTDI has a long history in rocket development and currently holds an official license from
Thales Belgium to manufacture
70 mm rocket motors.
Since 1985, PTDI has produced and delivered more than
43,000 units of:
- Folding Fin Aerial Rockets (FFAR)
- Wrap Around Fin Aerial Rockets (WAFAR)
Production is carried out with local content levels ranging from
20% to 40%, while annual rocket production capacity reaches
10,000 units.
For warheads, PTDI has produced more than
40,000 units with local content levels between
60% and 85%, supported by an annual production capacity of
5,000 units.
All rocket development activities are conducted at PTDI's Production Area 3 in Tasikmalaya, which serves as Indonesia's
Center of Excellence for 70 mm aerial rocket munitions. The facility is also being prepared for future technologies, including:
- Guided rockets
- Anti-drone warheads
- Advanced precision weapon systems
Certified Indigenous Rocket Systems
PTDI's rocket products have obtained certification from Indonesia's defense airworthiness authority.
In 2019, the company received
Military Air Weapon Type Certification from the
Indonesian Defence Airworthiness Authority (IDAA) for strategic components including:
- Smoke Warhead WD-703
- Rocket Motor RD-7010
Additional certifications were granted in 2021 for:
- Rocket Motor RD-702
- Rocket Motor RD-701
These certifications confirm that PTDI's rocket systems meet operational safety and quality standards required by the Indonesian Armed Forces.
Strategic Partnership with South Korea's LIG Nex1
PTDI also signed a strategic cooperation agreement with
LIG Nex1, one of South Korea's leading defense manufacturers.
The agreement covers:
- Joint marketing
- Joint sales activities
- Co-production
- Integrated weapons-system development
Potential cooperation areas include:
- Lightweight torpedoes

Marketing efforts will focus on Indonesia and the broader ASEAN region.
The memorandum of understanding was signed by PTDI's Director of Commerce, Technology and Development,
Moh Arif Faisal, and LIG Nex1 Executive Vice President
Paik Hyung Shik.
Guided Rocket Merah Putih Program
PTDI also signed an agreement with
PT SAS Aero Sishan to develop indigenous rocket systems.
The cooperation covers:
- Development of 70 mm rocket launchers
- Procurement of test rockets
- Development and production of FFAR 70 mm rockets

The program is intended to strengthen Indonesia's domestic defense supply chain and increase self-reliance in strategic weapon systems.
Increasing Domestic Defense Technology Capability
According to Moh Arif Faisal, the partnerships form part of PTDI's broader strategy to expand technology alliances, encourage technology transfer, and strengthen Indonesia's defense-industrial ecosystem.
"Our cooperation with LIG Nex1 and PT SAS Aero Sishan is part of our effort to expand technology partnerships, create opportunities for technology transfer, and strengthen the national supply chain. We want every step we take to generate added value for Indonesia's defense industry ecosystem and contribute directly to the development of domestic technological capabilities."
The agreements further reinforce PTDI's role as a key player in Indonesia's efforts to build an independent, technologically advanced, and globally competitive defense industry.
