Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency: Iran's nuclear facilities are buried in great depth, and targeting them with a near -impossible surgical strike
The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, said that the most sensitive Iranian nuclear facilities are buried at a depth with which it is difficult to carry out a precise military strike to destroy them, noting that "the most sensitive sites are at a depth of half a mile underground - I have visited them many times. To reach it, you have to take a spiral tunnel down, then down, then down.
In a lengthy interview with the Financial Times, Grossi warned that Iran has the materials necessary for the rush towards manufacturing a nuclear weapon, although it does not have the same weapon at the present time, and said: “Iran does not have a nuclear bomb now, but it has the materials that enable it to do so.”
Grusi praised the ongoing talks between the United States and Iran, and considered it a positive development that may avoid a catastrophic war, but at the same time he warned that the failure of negotiations "will likely mean a military move."
Grusi added that the Israeli threat to launch a military attack on Iran is strengthening the danger of turning the Iranian file into a catastrophic crisis, saying: "The Iranian matter involves an amazing catastrophic possibility."
He pointed out that the Iranian regime continues to enrich uranium to levels that cannot be justified for civil purposes, and prevents international inspectors from fully accessing its facilities, and at the same time continues to develop its missile capabilities, while official statements that hint on the possibility of seeking to obtain a nuclear bomb.
For its part, Israel believes that Iran's obtaining a nuclear weapon poses an existential threat, and has declared its willingness to strike its nuclear facilities to prevent Tehran from owning the bomb.
Nevertheless, Grusi expressed his optimism about the current dialogue between Tehran and Washington, praising the special envoy of former US President Donald Trump, Steve Whitkov, saying: “A very serious person - I do not agree with the opinions that say the opposite."
