Today marks the third anniversary of the passing of Syed Ali Shah Gailani, the "Lion of Kashmir."

Across the Occupied Valley, the day is being observed with deep respect and devotion.

A shutter-down strike has been called in the region, symbolizing the collective mourning and solidarity with Gailani's legacy of resistance.

Syed Ali Shah Gailani was born in 1929 in the village of Zari Manj, Tehsil Bandipora. His early education began at the Madrasah attached to the Wazir Khan Mosque and later at Oriental College, Lahore.

Gailani's career took various paths; he was a reporter for Akhbar Khittam and served as a teacher at Pathar Masjid in Srinagar and Intermediate College in Sopore.

His political journey was equally varied. Gailani was elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Occupied Kashmir in 1972, 1977, and 1987.

Over the course of his political career, he was associated with several key movements, including the National Conference, Jamaat-e-Islami, and Tehreek Hurriyat.

In 1993, Gaulani founded the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), a coalition advocating for Kashmir's self-determination.

He was elected as its chairman three times, from 1998 to 2006. Recognizing his unwavering commitment, the APHC leadership elected him as its chairman for life in 2015.

Syed Ali Shah Gailani's life was marked by relentless opposition to India's control over Kashmir. For 11 years, from 2010 until his death in 2021, he was imprisoned on the orders of successive Indian governments.

His passport was confiscated as early as 1981, a clear attempt to curtail his influence and movements on the international stage.

Despite these efforts, Gailani remained a powerful voice against human rights violations and the Indian military's presence in Kashmir.

On September 1, 2021, Gailani met his Creator in Hyderabad, Srinagar.

In a move that highlighted the fear his legacy instilled in the Indian establishment, the Modi government imposed a curfew across the valley immediately after his death.

The internet and mass media were suspended to prevent any large-scale public gatherings or protests.

In a poignant gesture, Gailani's body was draped in a Pakistani flag before being laid to rest.

His death reverberated far beyond Kashmir, with Pakistan's National Assembly offering prayers in absentia and hoisting the national flag in his honor.

Throughout his life, Syed Ali Shah Gailani was an advocate for Kashmir's accession to Pakistan and a fierce critic of India's policies in the region.

He vocally opposed the Indian army's actions and consistently highlighted human rights abuses in the valley.

His literary contributions are also significant, with 21 works to his name, including Rudad-e-Qafs, Nawai Hurriyat, and *India's Colonial Tactics*.

His other notable works include Sadaya Dard, Millat Mazloom, Sue Haq, and Payam Lakhin.

In recognition of his tireless efforts and contributions to the Kashmiri freedom movement, the Government of Pakistan awarded Syed Ali Geelani with the Nishan-e-Pakistan, the nation's highest civilian award.

As Kashmir observes the third anniversary of his passing, Syed Ali Shah Gailani's legacy as a symbol of resistance and unwavering commitment to Kashmir's cause remains deeply etched in the hearts of millions.

Indian soldiers in India-occupied Kashmir (IoK) killed two suspected fighters along the border with Pakistan, its army said on Monday, during campaigning for local elections in the disputed region.

IoK is gearing up for the first local assembly elections in a decade, with voting in the three-phased poll beginning on September 18.

The Indian army’s White Knight Corps said “two terrorists have been neutralised”, a term they use indicating the men had been killed, in the forested Nowshera region.

The army said military supplies and automatic weapons were seized.

About 500,000 Indian troops are deployed in the region, battling a 35-year fight that has killed tens of thousands of civilians, soldiers and fighters since 1989.

The territory has been without an elected government since 2019 when its partial autonomy was cancelled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government and it was brought under New Delhi’s direct rule.

In August 2019, India had stripped Kashmiris of the special autonomy they had for seven decades through a rushed presidential order. By repealing Article 370 of the constitution, people from the rest of India will now have the right to acquire property in occupied Kashmir and settle there permanently.

Kashmiris as well as critics of India’s Hindu nationalist-led government see the move as an attempt to dilute the demographics of Muslim-majority Kashmir with Hindu settlers.

A total of 8.7 million people will be eligible to vote for the region’s assembly, with results expected on October 8.

Ahead of the vote, Modi is expected to address rallies for his Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the southern Jammu areas of the occupied territory, which has a sizeable Hindu population.

In the past two years, more than 50 Indian soldiers were killed in clashes with fighters mostly in the occupied Jammu district.
