New York poised for first South Asian - origin and Muslim mayor as Cuomo concedes to Mamdani

I'll say it right now. Perhaps we should pin this.

If Mamdani is elected as mayor, let's see in 3 years just how well quality of life in NYC has improved.

I will say it now that nothing will change for the most part. Some segments might improve. Others will get a lot worse.

What is your issue with Mamdani ? I think he is offering fresh ideas and approach and helping the image of Muslims incidentally as well.
Apart from the overall economic ridiculousness of some of his ideas and the inability of US systems and supporting economies to digest them - there is little help on the image other than a fringe left.

I hope Mamdani is elected mayor of NYC and runs the city to the ground with his communist policies. Am not being sarcastic. That is my genuine wish. I want New Yorkers to pay, and yes suffer, for their electoral decisions.
That exactly how the world felt with the U.S and MAGA👍

And if his proposals work, you'll never acknowledge them.

Also, how many times does it need to be said, he's not a communist. He's democratic socialist, which is not actually socialism. In any other country he'd be considered center-left.

I'm a socialist, he is not.

All major cities are like that

The pressure on the majority however is becoming unsustainable

If you look at the policies, socialism and tax breaks and bailouts for the rich, elite, banks and companies are common but the average workers gets cold hard capitalism

People are genuinely beginning to suffer under crippling living and housing costs

It's simply not sustainable

So whether it's mamdani or someone else, this has to be addressed outside of the normal tax breaks for the rich bullshit

Socialism only works if you aren’t crushing the middle class to fund it. Tax breaks only works if it goes across the board with process cleanup.
You want socialism - provide accountability on government processes instead of bloated waste and corruption.
You can tax billionaires to death and if you still lose 60% of it in bloated processed, this tick and that stamp - and this fees and other misappropriation. It matters not.
Billionaires will still be ok - but the middle class that actually runs this country instead of food stampers and urchins will suffer. Fat use any uplift will be for those folks you’re going to drive more middle class to poverty.

Shit you not - not even a mile stretch was updated nearby. $8 million.
Less than mile of recarpeting at best.

We may have the bastards on the run in my local.

Message this morning from a friend who hates the corruption as much as I do:

Well, this round of hiked up water bills & everyone complaining about it, got channel 2 & 6 news attention about Nowata.

As of yesterday, 13 federal government vans rolled into town & plan in staying a while.

Finally!

I spoke with one auditor & everything I mentioned, he was already aware of & ready to get to work turning every stone.

Probably over the $1.5 million federal grant for water improvements last year. The only thing to have improved is the fleet of vehicles for the police and officials.

Word is getting around, even if the local media does not want to cover this.

The issue is cyclical. Federal programs often prioritize politically visible or urgent causes, such as resettlement for latin American migrants, over basic infrastructure needs in long-standing neighborhoods. That leads to a simple question: Why do those programs receive funding before fixing water systems or roads that have served communities for 50 years?

When asked, states often say, “These were federal funds, not part of our state budget.” Fine. But then the real issue lies in how the federal government allocates money. Instead of attaching dollars to specific programs, it should focus on properly funding its own departments and giving more direct, flexible support to states. Let states decide their own priorities.

If Oregon or Colorado want to invest differently than Texas, that should be up to their elected state representatives. At least the decisions are being made by people who live in and answer to that population.

At the local level, even if we come from very different backgrounds or have opposing views, we are still neighbors. That makes it more likely we’ll talk, disagree, resolve issues, or at worst, live with the consequences of our local choices. What matters is that those choices are made close to the people affected, not by someone far removed from our community.

The same logic applies to any state. If New Yorkers choose a more progressive model, let them. They will experience the results in real time and vote accordingly. The same principle should apply to every other state.

When the federal government overreaches, it encourages states to do the same. That often results in local governments being overwhelmed or misaligned with the real needs of their communities. The farther removed the decision-makers are, the less effective and accountable the system becomes.
