Pakistan General Elections 2024

Day 5 and X remains inaccessible to majority of users in Pakistan

Services of social media site X (formerly Twitter) remain disrupted in many areas across the country for the fifth day, with officials still reluctant to offer any clarity on the situation.

Dawn.com staffers were unable to access the platform without using a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

Rights bodies and journalists’ organisations have condemned the muzzling of social media, while internet service providers have also lamented losses due to disruptions.

Why were elections held if decisions were to be taken in a drawing room, asks SHC CJ

Sindh High Court (SHC) Chief Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi has questioned why elections were held when positions were being decided upon in a drawing room.

The statement comes a day after the PML-N and PPP reached a consensus on the power-sharing formula.

“Who’s going to be president, who’s going to be prime minister, who will get governorship; if this had to happen, why were elections held?” Justice Abbasi remarked while hearing petitions on the suspension of internet services.

He said that it seemed as though the courts had become useless, and questioned who was running the country. The judge lamented that the courts are not being taken seriously.

Maryam will rebuild Punjab, vows PML-N

The PML-N has said that its Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz would “rebuild Punjab”, in a reference to her nomination by the party as their Punjab chief minister candidate.

In a post on X, the PML-N’s official account said, “Through thick and thin, Maryam Nawaz Sharif has been the anchor that has held PML-N steady.
“She rebuilt the party, and she will rebuild Punjab,” it asserted.

What's going on currently is that courts and military is playing the old play book

Trying to pin everything on politicans for the mess the courts and military created

This may have worked in old days but won't work now

They successfully Brian washed people into believing that it was the politicians who created all the mess from 1947 to 2002 but we all know who was the responsible for 1950s 1970 and 1990s

The courts and the military

‘Too late’, Dar tells Haideri on govt formation in Balochistan

Feb 21, 2024
The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) approached the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) for potential collaboration in forming a government in Balochistan. However, the PML-N declined the late proposal, citing prior engagements.

According to Express News, a meeting took place between representatives of both parties to discuss the prospects of government formation in Balochistan. Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri represented JUI-F, and Ishaq Dar attended the meeting on behalf of PML-N.

Sources reveal that Haideri expressed the possibility of JUI-F and PML-N forming a government together in Balochistan. However, Ishaq Dar responded, stating that despite the interest in collaboration, the JUI-F's approach came too late.

"Maulana, you are too late. I was contacting you for four days but you could not be reached," Ishaq Dar reportedly informed Haideri during the meeting.

He said PML-N has already entered into a power-sharing agreement with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), further limiting its options for collaboration. Ishaq Dar acknowledged the historical association with JUI-F, stating, "We have been together through hot and cold weather," promising to inform the top leadership about JUI-F's offer.

PTI gambit ahead of reserved allotment

Feb 21, 2024
The process of allotment of reserved seats for women and minorities to the political parties in the National Assembly and the provincial legislatures has entered its final stage, following the compiling of the results of the recent general polls by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) but the situation has become intriguing after the PTI-backed independent lawmakers, who has just joined the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), has 93 members in the lower house of parliament as well 84 and 116 in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab assemblies, respectively.

As per the Constitution, the reserved seats are allocated to the political parties on the basis of the number of their lawmakers elected on the general seats. For their allocation, the ECP had already received the priority list of candidates from the parties before the February 8 general elections.

The situation this year is different from the previous elections as the largest group of lawmakers are independents, who cannot have the reserved seats.

Barring a few, these independents are backed by the PTI, which was unable contest on its popular electoral symbol of the ‘cricket bat’.
