Jakarta-
Until the third quarter of 2023, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Persero managed to score a net profit of IDR 1.51 trillion, up 20% compared to the same period in 2022, which was IDR 1.26 trillion. Not only focusing on scoring profitability, KAI prioritizes the principles of Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) in running a business, so that it can create a sustainable transportation ecosystem.

EVP of Corporate Secretary of KAI Raden Agus Dwinanto Budiadji said that various concrete actions have been taken by the company to implement ESG, such as the use of bio diesel for trains, the use of solar panels in stations and offices, as well as Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) activities in the environmental sector or assistance for MSMEs.

"Trains are a sustainable mode of transportation. In this era that prioritizes environmental, social, and governance (ESG), railways will be the main driver for environment-based transportation," said Agus Dwinanto in a written statement, Friday (10/11/2023).

KAI has used Solar Power Plants (PLTS) or solar panels at Gambir Station and the Jakarta Railway Center building. In the future, KAI will install solar panels at 40 stations and 2 yasa halls. The installation of this Solar Panel is an energy transition effort carried out by KAI by using New Renewable Energy (NRE) to supply electrical energy in various KAI assets.

As for railway fuel, currently KAI has used Biosolar B30 which means that 30 percent of the mixture consists of fuel derived from vegetable or organic sources, such as palm oil, castor, or from various other organic materials.
This B30 biodiesel has lower exhaust emissions, so it can help reduce air pollution. Even at some points in Sumatra, KAI has used Biosolar B35 which means the level of environmental friendliness is higher.

One of the advantages of trains is their huge capacity. One car can transport 50 tons of goods or the size of 2 container trucks. In fact, a series of coal transportation trains in southern Sumatra can pull 60 cars or 3,000 tons at a time. If transported by truck, approximately 120 trucks are needed. This is certainly more environmentally friendly because of the lower use of fuel and minimal pollution.

Meanwhile, KAI also continues to support the progress of MSMEs in Indonesia through the TJSL program, including by providing capital assistance, improving soft skills through training, and participating in various exhibition activities both on a national and international scale.

Currently, there are 660 active fostered partners of KAI spread across all operational areas of Java and Sumatra. In 2023, until October, KAI has distributed funds of IDR 3.8 billion to its fostered MSMEs through a collaboration program.

"KAI shows its strong commitment to the implementation of Environmental Social Governance (ESG). Through the implementation of ESG, KAI is not only a pioneer in sustainable transportation, but also plays a role in creating long-term value for all stakeholders," Agus concluded.
