Whoos HSR train seen in Bekasi city, West Java

Friday, 27 Jun 2025

BEIJING: South-East Asia's first high-speed railway has surpassed 10 million passenger trips as of Wednesday (June 25), marking a major milestone in China-Indonesia infrastructure cooperation, according to China Railway International.

Since launching operations in October last year, the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway has run nearly 30,000 passenger train services, safely covering more than 4.63 million kilometres.

The service has maintained stable operations and delivered a fast, efficient and comfortable travel option that has been widely embraced by both commuters and tourists, the company said.

The rail line, a flagship project under the Belt and Road Initiative jointly developed by Chinese and Indonesian partners, links the capital city of Jakarta with the tourism hub of Bandung.

With trains reaching speeds of up to 350km per hour, the line has cut travel time between the two cities from more than three hours to just 46 minutes.

Passenger traffic has shown strong growth, especially during major holiday periods such as Christmas and Ramadan, the company said. Daily train services have increased from 14 to 62, boosting seating capacity from about 8,400 to more than 37,000. Peak daily ridership has reached 25,000 trips, with some trains recording occupancy rates of up to 99.6 percent.

The high-speed rail has become a game changer for many Indonesians. Rahmanda, who runs a transportation consultancy in Jakarta, said the service has helped him reach clients on time.

Jakarta MRT

Jakarta —

Construction of the MRT Jakarta Phase 2A line (Bundaran HI–Monas) continues to progress rapidly. The Thamrin and Monas Stations are scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.

PT MRT Jakarta President Director, Tuhiyat, stated that construction progress for both Thamrin and Monas Stations has already reached around 90 percent. The stations are expected to begin gradual operations in 2027.

“Thamrin Station and Monas Station are nearly 90 percent complete, and both will be finished by the end of next year. Therefore, by 2027, we’ll be ready to start operations in stages,” said Tuhiyat during the MRT Jakarta Fellowship Class in Central Jakarta, Thursday (October 9, 2025).

Currently, people heading to Monas (the National Monument) using MRT Jakarta must transfer at Bundaran HI Station and continue their journey via other transport modes, such as TransJakarta. Once the new stations are operational, passengers will be able to travel directly to Monas Station without transferring.

MRT and BRT (TransJakarta bus system) Connection in South Jakarta

“Later, people won’t need to stop at Bundaran HI Station anymore — they can continue straight to Monas Station,” he added.

MRT Phase 2 to Reach Ancol

At the same event, Jakarta Transportation Agency (Dishub) Head Syafrin Liputo explained that the MRT Phase 2 North–South Line will extend all the way to Ancol, with a total length of 28.3 kilometers.

“The construction will continue up to Ancol for the North–South Phase. The entire North–South line will be approximately 28.3 kilometers long, stretching from South to North. It’s currently in progress,” said Syafrin.

He added that the section up to Harmoni is expected to be operational by 2027.

“We hope operations can reach Harmoni by 2027. So, people traveling from the South, who currently stop at Bundaran HI and continue by TransJakarta, will soon be able to go directly to Monas and Harmoni using MRT Jakarta. This will support large-scale area development around Harmoni in the future,” he said.

MRT Jakarta Phase 2 Overview

The MRT Jakarta Phase 2 project consists of Phase 2A and Phase 2B:

  • Phase 2A includes seven underground stations: Thamrin, Monas, Harmoni, Sawah Besar, Mangga Besar, Glodok, and Kota, spanning about 5.8 kilometers.
  • Phase 2B will add two underground stationsMangga Dua and Ancol — and one depot at Ancol Marina, covering an additional 6 kilometers.

Altogether, MRT Jakarta Phase 2 stretches 11.8 kilometers, from Bundaran HI to West Ancol, extending the North–South corridor of Phase 1, which has been operational since 2019, connecting Lebak Bulus to Bundaran HI.

2 big public transportation projects that are still going on in Jakarta are MRT (underground) extension and LRT (elevated) extension.

You can see LRT project if you patience enough to see this youtuber who drive around Jakarta. While MRT project in Thamrin road can be seen in the beginning of the video.

There is still other big project like road development in North Jakarta that is built to ease the logistic movement from port, but it is not covered in this video

Jakarta —

The number of passengers using the LRT Jabodebek continues to grow. From August 28, 2023, to October 8, 2025, a total of 47.1 million people have used the service.

Executive Vice President of LRT Jabodebek, Mochamad Purnomosidi, said that from its launch in August until December 2023, 4.56 million passengers had used the LRT. The number rose sharply in 2024, reaching 21.05 million users, and increased again in 2025, with 21.50 million users recorded up to early October.

He added that growth was also reflected in the average number of daily passengers. In 2023, the weekday average was 37,436 passengers. This figure rose to 70,976 passengers per weekday in 2024, an increase of about 89.5% compared to 2023.

By 2025, the number grew again to 96,560 passengers per weekday, representing a 36% increase from 2024 and a 157.9% increase compared to 2023.

“This growth shows that more people are relying on LRT Jabodebek as their main mode of transportation to support daily mobility,” said Purnomosidi in a written statement on Sunday (October 12, 2025).

Purnomosidi noted that the increase in ridership was largely due to government support through subsidies, which have made the LRT Jabodebek service affordable and comfortable for the public.

“The government’s subsidy not only supports operational sustainability but also strengthens the role of LRT Jabodebek as an essential part of the integrated mass transportation system,” he explained.

He also highlighted that the presence of the LRT Jabodebek has helped stimulate economic activity around stations, create new business opportunities, and improve regional connectivity.

“Ultimately, the subsidies provided by the government return to the public in the form of sustainable social, economic, and environmental benefits,” he said.

JAKARTA — Indonesia is planning a major expansion of its railway network by building approximately 14,000 kilometers of new rail lines, with total investment needs estimated at:

Rp1,100–1,200 trillion (≈ $68.8–75 billion USD)
Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) said the scale of investment reflects the strategic importance of railway development in supporting long-term economic growth and regional connectivity.

“The figure is large, but this is a long-term investment for Indonesia’s future,” he said in Jakarta on April 22, 2026.

1776918741748.png

The government emphasized that the project cannot rely solely on the state budget (APBN). Instead, financing will involve a combination of public-private partnerships (PPP/KPBU), private investment, and other alternative funding schemes.

AHY also stressed that railway development must be carried out in an integrated manner, aligned with spatial planning and key economic centers, to maximize its impact on both logistics and passenger mobility.

Separately, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has confirmed plans to begin large-scale railway reactivation starting this year, in line with Indonesia’s National Railway Master Plan (Ripnas) 2030.

Under the broader railway strategy, development and expansion targets include:

  • Sumatra → Target network of 2,900 km (currently ~1,854 km)
  • Kalimantan → Planned 1,200 km
  • Sulawesi → Target 734 km
  • Papua → Target 100 km
  • Java, Madura, Bali → Planned 5,590 km (currently ~4,921 km active)
In addition, the government plans to reactivate 13 railway lines in Java to improve connectivity and network utilization.

Overall, the development of 14,000 km of new railway lines represents a long-term national infrastructure initiative aimed at strengthening Indonesia’s logistics network, improving regional integration, and supporting sustainable economic growth.

Jakarta. Indonesia plans to build a 14,000-kilometer railway network across Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi over the next two decades as part of a major infrastructure drive beyond Java, a senior official said on Thursday.

The project is expected to require an investment of around Rp 1,200 trillion ($69.4 billion), Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono said in a statement.

“The figure is large, but this is a long-term investment in Indonesia’s future,” Agus said, adding that the cost would not be borne solely by the state budget and would also involve private-sector participation.
