Jakarta. A recent survey by Indikator Politik Indonesia reveals that public satisfaction with transportation during Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's 10-year presidency is rated high, scoring 3.962 on a scale of 1 to 5.

The "Public Evaluation of Public Transportation and Infrastructure Performance Under Jokowi's Government" survey categorizes user satisfaction into five levels: 1-1.8 signifies very low, 1.8-2.6 indicates low, 2.6-3.4 represents moderate, 3.4-4.2 denotes high, and scores above 4.2 indicate very high satisfaction.

"Overall, the public transportation satisfaction index stands at 3.962, placing it in the high category. The highest score of 4.193 reflects reliability, showing how public transportation assists residents with their needs, while the lowest score of 3.704 pertains to the number of vehicles," said Burhanuddin Muhtadi, senior researcher at Indikator, on Wednesday.

Burhanuddin noted that satisfaction scores are relatively higher in Western Indonesia, with an index of 3.972, followed by Central Indonesia at 3.943, and Eastern Indonesia at 3.759. "This indicates that Eastern Indonesia lags in public transportation development. Other regions have achieved high scores but still have room for improvement," he explained.

Additionally, he pointed out that across all three regions, the number of vehicles and punctuality are generally less satisfying compared to other aspects. In Central Indonesia, affordability also received lower satisfaction ratings.

"In Eastern Indonesia, satisfaction remains below average for route suitability, comfort, safety, and price accessibility," Burhanuddin added.

He highlighted key trends from the survey, noting that urban residents have a more positive perception of public transportation performance, with a score of 70.8 percent, compared to 59.2 percent for rural residents. This underscores the importance of enhancing public transportation in rural areas, according to Burhanuddin.

Furthermore, white-collar workers, such as employees and professionals, tend to view public transportation more favorably, with a positive rating of 72.7 percent, compared to other occupational groups.

Geographically, respondents from Sulawesi (77 percent), Kalimantan (75.5 percent), and Jakarta (74 percent) expressed more positive assessments of public transportation than respondents from other regions, which still require improvements in transport conditions.

"Three key factors influence the public's choice of public transportation: safety during travel at 29.7 percent, affordable prices at 25.5 percent, and vehicle comfort at 15.4 percent," Burhanuddin concluded.

The Indonesian Political Indicator survey was conducted from August 30 to September 6, 2024, among eligible voters aged 17 or older or those who were married at the time of the survey. A total of 1,200 respondents participated, with an additional sample of 400 from the Jabodetabek area.

Sampling was conducted using a multistage random sampling method with a margin of error of approximately ±2.8 percent at a 95 percent confidence level. Interviews were carried out face-to-face by trained interviewers.

Public Transportation Satisfaction Index Under Jokowi:
  • Total Satisfaction Index: 3.962
  • General Satisfaction: 3.97
  • Route Suitability: 3.924
  • Number of Vehicles: 3.742
  • Punctuality: 3.794
  • Service Staff: 4.071
  • Drivers/Conductors: 3.996
  • Comfort: 4.014
  • Safety: 4.008
  • Price Accessibility: 4.009

Evolution of Jakarta MRT 2019-2040

More people in Greater Jakarta use public transportation system. It causes the government to expand several train station, bus station into bigger capacity. For example is Tanah Abang station in Central Jakarta, it will be expanded to have fourth time current capacity

Better public transportation system, I think is the reason Indonesia new car sales are stuck at 1 million cars per year

Jakarta. The government is planning to connect the Greater Jakarta light rail transit or LRT with the Soekarno-Hatta Airport train to further cut travel time for many travelers.

A year has passed since the Jabodebek LRT project -- which connects Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, and Bekasi cities -- got launched. Earlier this month, State-Owned Enterprise Minister Erick Thohir revealed that Indonesia was mulling linking the LRT with the Soekarno-Hatta Airport line. Indonesians can hop on the airport train from Manggarai Station in South Jakarta, among others. Erick, however, stopped short of going into more details of the LRT integration plans. On Monday, Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi confirmed that work had already been underway to find ways to integrate the two transport systems.

The Jabodebek LRT, which cost Indonesia Rp 32.6 trillion or around $2 billion to build, has recorded at least 18 million passengers so far this year. The state-run railway firm Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) is the operator of the Jabodebek LRT.

At present, its subsidiary KAI Commuter is the operator of the Soekarno-Hatta Airport train, which recorded 1.9 million passengers throughout 2023. Its ridership reached 1.6 million people in January-September 2024.

Thai visited Jakarta and use public transportation from Airport to their hotel. After using Airport train, they use KRL train (Commuter Line) which is the cheapest train in Indonesia (the most affordable one and with longest route in Greater Jakarta region).
