Who Rules the Waves? U.S. and Chinese Fleets, by Tonnage

So why China is building aircraft carriers then?
They are still good on medium and small countries, and there are lots of them along the seas. The defense of carriers will be upgraded with time too.

Not really. If you consider China's population. 4 times of the US. 10 large carriers plus 20 drone carriers are reasonable numbers.
China don't need these numbers, China don't have a global ambitions like USA have, China only have a regional ambitions ( indo-Pacific region) so it's stupid to build such a large number of carriers with no use, China won't intended to go in Atlantic Ocean

Many in China against the craft carrier building acutally share exactly the same opinion.

Overview

With China’s third aircraft carrier in sea trails, and reports that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy already has more ships than the U.S., just how do these superpower rivals stack up, ton for ton?

Key Takeaways

  • The U.S. Navy has over 3.6 million (U.S.) tons of ships in its fleet, nearly twice the size of China’s combined fleets of just over 2 million tons.
  • While China boasts the largest number of ships, 1,015 between both the PLA Navy and the Chinese Coast Guard, against the U.S. Navy’s 364, they are generally smaller and less advanced than their U.S. counterparts.
  • The Chinese Coast Guard has received many of the PLA Navy’s older ships, however the vast majority of their ships are patrol and coastal combatants that average 711 tons apiece and aren’t able to sail far from China’s coast.
  • Even as the U.S. Navy edges out the PLA Navy across almost every ship type, China does hold a 16:1 edge in tonnage of landing ships and craft, reflecting the Asian superpower’s stated policy goal of reunifying Taiwan with the mainland.

Most US ships are 30 to 40 years old. The scary thing is US cannot build a simple frigate on budget and time. China can easily reach the size of the US navy in 10 years but I don't think we want to, we are not policing the world, we just need to maintain supremacy in Asia.

Smaller ship but numerous and fast is deadlier and more dangerous.

Especially if each small ship equiped with technology and weapon that capable to destroy big ships.

True, China always knows not to put all the eggs in just one giant basket.

That's what happened between China and Japan in the late 19th century Sino-Japanese sea war that decided the fate of each country for the next 50 years. Japanese navy battleships at the time were smaller in size, their cannons were smaller. but faster in ship moving speed and more importantly much faster in firing shells. As the results, Japan won the sea war and it started the invasion by the Japanese in East Asia for the next 50 years.

Anti-ship ballistic missiles are a joke. It is unproven in combat anywhere
It is another way of saying I do not have a prayer against US Navy carrier group

FAILED MISERABLY IN KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA .
and likely in many many other countries and regions, such as in the Red Sea where a USA carrier was clobbered by a DIY home made Houthi missile.

And as demonstrated so clearly in KSA the Aegis and Patriot systems defending Saudi a joke as the Aegis and Patriot cannot even detect a few sub Mach cruise missiles not to talk of taking them down. Even to now, no one sure where those came from and who flown them. Despite overlapping coverage of those Patriot and Aegis systems.

The American systems dunno where the slow poke missiles came from and if missiles did not go off with bangs leaving smoke and fire, might not even have existed at all

New sales pitch? US makes the world’s ‘finest’ anti-air systems, but sometimes they just don’t work, Pompeo explains
Saudi air defenses like Patriot & Aegis don’t match their advertised properties, unfit for real combat – Russian Army (MAP)

Stop peddling false information. Maybe 25-30% of US ships are older than 30 years.

The USN has commissioned 116 ships since 2000. There’s a dozen Burke destroyers launched or under construction, another dozen Virginias either launched or under construction. Colombia class SSBN under construction. The CVN-79 Kennedy and LHA-8 Bougainville are both being fitted out. The Constellation class frigate has begun construction.

China could double its 55 fleet and add a dozen 52D destroyers today and the USN would still have almost double the amount of VLS cells than China.
