U.S. travel advisory level to Bangladesh raised after police impose "shoot-on-sight" curfew amid protests

The U.S. State Department has raised the travel advisory level for Bangladesh amid civil unrest in the South Asia country. Police have imposed a strict curfew with a "shoot-on-sight" order, and military forces are patrolling parts of the capital after scores were killed and hundreds injured in clashes over the allocation of civil service jobs.

The travel advisory urges Americans to reconsider travel to the South Asian country.

"Ongoing demonstrations and violent clashes have been reported throughout the city of Dhaka, its neighboring areas, and throughout Bangladesh," the department said in a news release. "Telecommunications have been interrupted in Dhaka and across the country. Due to the security situation, there may be a delay in provision of routine consular services."

Any Americans who do travel to Bangladesh should avoid demonstrations and political gatherings, monitor local media for news updates, and stay in touch with the State Department, the news release said.

The U.S. Embassy in Dhaka said Friday that reports indicated "hundreds to possibly thousands" were injured across Bangladesh. It said the situation was "extremely volatile."

Some news are saying army gave 48 hours for Hasina to sort this mess out.

Local media reported that some 800 inmates fled from a prison in Narsingdi, a district north of the capital, after protesters stormed the facility and set it on fire Friday.

The chaos highlights cracks in Bangladesh's governance and economy and the frustration of youths who lack good jobs upon graduation. They also represent the biggest challenge to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina since she won a fourth consecutive term in office after January's elections, boycotted by the main opposition groups.

Protesters argue the quota system is discriminatory and benefits supporters of Hasina, whose Awami League party led the independence movement, saying it should be replaced with a merit-based system. Hasina has defended the quota system, saying that veterans deserve the highest respect for their contributions in the war against Pakistan, regardless of their political affiliation.

Representatives from both sides met late Friday in an attempt to reach a resolution. At least three student leaders were present and demanded the reform of the current quota system, the reopening of student dormitories shut by the police following the clashes and for some university officials to step down after failing to protect campuses from the violence.

Law Minister Anisul Huq said late Friday the government was open to discussing their demands.

Bangladesh needs this anti government movement to turn in to a political organisation, then from there identity some good leadership and create a political party or 2 political parties, then people of Bangladesh will have a option to vote for in the elections. That is only if the elite/establishment allows free and fair elections, otherwise the same old parties will be back in power and i thought Hasina is famous in Bangladesh, she is after all the daughter of Mujib ur Rehman, the hero of Bangladesh. I always thought she is trying her best to make Bangladesh create as she claims to be bangali nationalist.

Hasina is not bad.
She actually genuinely wants to improve Bangladesh. The problem lies in rest of her party politicians who are literally thugs, goons and illiterate extortionists. Hasina knows she is NOTHING without the support from these thugs.

Thats why she forexample did nothing to discipline a party member (MP) from Chittagong who extorted several billion dollars from multiple Bangladeshi banks. creating a major banking instability.

That is the single major drawback of Hasina, she is nowhere near powerful enough to reform her party nor steer the political landscape in a more stable and civilized direction. She neither has the intellect nor the ability’s to someone like forexample Lee Kuan Yew.

And yes her serious daddy isssues are hilarious. Tbf compared with Khaleda Zia ( leader of majn opposition), she is far more intelligent and educated. But Khaleda Zia never even completed High School as far as i know..lol.

Its depressing and an embarrassment for Bangladesh and bengalis.

The 30% government job quota for Freedom Fighters families is just another way to bribe her loyal party peasants.

Anti-quota movement: ‘Bangla Blockade’ to continue on Monday
As part of their anti-quota movement, students have said they will continue their “Bangla Blockade,” or roadblocks at key points on the streets, on Monday.

Nahid Islam, the movement's coordinator, made the announcement at 8pm on Sunday, saying the blockade would start at 3:30pm.

Earlier, the demonstrators said law enforcement had sat down for discussions with the chief coordinator of the movement, Nahid Islam, and key coordinators, Sarjis Alam and Hasnat Abdullah.

However, after some time, Hasnat returned to Shahbagh and reported that they had been taken to meet with a team of representatives from the prime minister.

Sarjis Alam said: "Our protest is not against the constitution. If we look at the distribution of seats in our parliament, we see that of the 350 seats, 50 are reserved, amounting to 14%. If the quota were 56%, there would be 196 reserved seats. When our parliament, representing the entire country, has a 14% quota, why should government jobs have a 56% quota?"

Meanwhile, Hasnat said: "To those who think we have political motives, you will not see us in any other movement if we succeed in this one. We will return to our studies, where we belong.

"We previously had a four-point demand, but from tomorrow, we will have just one demand: abolish unreasonable and discriminatory quotas in all grades, reduce the quotas to the minimum level for the backward groups mentioned in the constitution and reform the quota system by passing a law in parliament.'"

On the other hand, Nahid said they had been finally able to grab everyone's attention, including the prime minister's. "She once declared in favour of students in 2018, and we hope she will do the same again. We have no other option but to protest to claim our right."

"Our class and exam boycott will continue for an indefinite period. Blockades will be maintained at various points across the country. We went to Karwan Bazar from Shahbag today, and tomorrow we will pass Farmgate. We will gather at 3:30 tomorrow for our next activity."

From the evening onwards, demonstrators started gathering at Shahbagh from various points in the capital. In fulfilling their announced program demanding quota reform, they had blocked several key intersection in Dhaka.

After announcing their next program, they began to leave Shahbagh, and traffic started to return to normal.

Demanding the abolition of quotas in government jobs, students blocked several intersections in the capital from 3pm, including Nilkhet, Science Lab, Karwan Bazar, Banglamotor, Chankharpul and Agargaon.

With various major intersections blocked one by one, the capital came to a standstill, with hundreds of vehicles halted on every road and thousands of people trying to reach their destinations on foot.

At the Banglamotor intersection, a woman named Afifa Firoz said she was heading home to Moghbazar with her child in a rickshaw from Science Lab. “However, the students stopped us at Banglamotor. Now, we cannot go anywhere.”

Frustrated, a man named Sirajul Islam said many people were walking, questioning how one could stay in the same place for hours.

At the Panthapath intersection, two people, Mahmud and Juthi, said they had to walk from Paltan as no vehicles were moving.

Traffic Inspector (TI) Md Habib said in line with the commissioner's instructions, police were facilitating vehicle movement on alternative roads if the main roads were blocked.

The protesting students blocked roads with national flags in their hands and on their heads, holding various placards and chanting different slogans.

What kind of losers want government jobs?

How about getting marketable skills?

There’s a huge shortage worldwide of trades people (electricians, carpenters, plumbers, plasterers, bricklayers).

There’s also a huge shortage of medical staff.

Unfortunately, Bangladeshis cannot even string two sentences together in English hence these jobs go to Indians!!!

Bangladeshi private sector has to import millions of Indians and Sri Lankans to fill vital roles in hospitality and garments sector.

These “students” need to wake up!!!

Btw, absolutely oppose the BAL quota system that means most government jobs goto BAL cronies.

Anyway, quota or no quota - I would NEVER EVER apply for a civil service job!!!

There was a news that curfew will be lifted today.

The SCB has already granted much of the rioters demands, they should go back to their homes and the government should hunker down now and not give an inch. I am afraid the movement has been hijacked by transnational actors- the usual sucpects.

Regards

Hasina govt failed. Under her BD enjoyed few good years but now world have changed. Huge debt increase while she make up fake export numbers. Had to go to IMF bailout because of balance of payment crisis which is sign of bad governing. Tax to GDP ratio is worst in the world, like 8% which is well below even Pakistan 12%. This probably mean GDP numbers were fake and not just exports.

Looks like only India have managed economy well since 1991 IMF bailout in south asia.

Live with in your means as Bangladesh have no geopolitical importance in the world unlike Pakistan who have been taking advantage of being rentier state till 2010. Once wars ended so did Pakistan free dollars.

brave Bangalis brave!! respect you guy i wish we Pakistanis were as brave and united i wish our wardi mafia was loyal!

Hasina needs to back down and reduce this "freedom fighter" quota down to something like 10% which most people would tolerate.

In a country without a strong economy yet, a 30% quota just makes a bad job situation even worse.

Hasina government is must in South Asia..... this is the only sane minded, progressive and peaceful neighbor India got due to Hasina madam....

If some other government comes to power it will be like Bangladesh getting Pappu with congress.....

At least Pappu is not extremist... he is idiot....

other government will make Bangladesh Islamic extremist country and topple its economic growth....

No country wants to do business or setup business with extremists government or junta government in power....

I hope Bangladesh youth are sane enough to know what is good for their country....
