What if the purpose is to contain China's influence in Afghanistan? ;)

And giving Pakistan money and getting a drone base in return will help with that somehow?

The game with China is global, just like the Cold War once was. Pakistan is not really at the center of the geopolitical arena currently, and will not likely be so for the foreseeable future.

Yes that's true. Only thing is that some Pakistanis can earn some money.

Wars may be global but battles are always local.
Qatra qatra darya banta hai...

Pakistan is very central to China's plans to keep India in check. If the US can show the world, especially China and India, that Pakistan is compromised, it will be a powerful statement.

It's like making sure to be seen in public with someone else's girlfriend/boyfriend....

Well, no money is free. Those getting it will have to provide something that other side values in return.

I am content to wait and see this one play out. As usual, Pakistan greatly overestimates its importance in its own mind and ends up lurching from disaster to disaster in a panicked survival mode. Quite comic in a way, if it weren't so tragic for its people.

CPEC, Thar coal, infrastructure, Reko Dik, Riasat-e-Madina, the self-deluding list goes on and on. Meanwhile hovering around the PKR is about 300 to the USD and not looking good. Consuming far more than what it produces may no longer work for Pakistan that has become used to being supported by the global community.

The world is moving on to other issues, in my view.

Pakistan that has become used to being supported by the global community.

Very true.

The economic model adopted by the ruling elite is to hop from loan to loan, siphon a percentage commission along the way, and play coordinated musical chairs behind a facade of democratic rivalry. The military turns a blind eye as long as they get their 'protection money'.

It is unfair and unethical for people like us living comfortably in the West to tell the locals they should rise up in the streets. We do not have to face the consequences from the brutal regime. And their brutality is unrestrained.

It is a sad reality and we are powerless.

I am quite sure that if the people were truly bothered by their plight, they would do something to rectify the situation. Despite all the strident claims, I can see that the people actually remain quite accepting of their situation. Who are we to tell them what to do?
