Bangladesh Socio-Political Crisis 2024

BD Students in abroad demand resignation of Sheikh Hasina after violent crackdowns

Hasina needs to back down and reduce this "freedom fighter" quota down to something like 10% which most people would tolerate.

In a country without a strong economy yet, a 30% quota just makes a bad job situation even worse.

She should have met their demands instead of mocking and calling them anti national entity.

So far, more than 300 people gave their lives. It's no longer about quota. Hasina must step down.

I don't know too much about Bangladesh's internal politics, but from what I picked up, it had something to do with a quota system for jobs, where certain segments of society were given preference.

What kind of losers want government jobs?

How about getting marketable skills?

There’s a huge shortage worldwide of trades people (electricians, carpenters, plumbers, plasterers, bricklayers).

There’s also a huge shortage of medical staff.

Unfortunately, Bangladeshis cannot even string two sentences together in English hence these jobs go to Indians!!!

Bangladeshi private sector has to import millions of Indians and Sri Lankans to fill vital roles in hospitality and garments sector.

These “students” need to wake up!!!

Btw, absolutely oppose the BAL quota system that means most government jobs goto BAL cronies.

Anyway, quota or no quota - I would NEVER EVER apply for a civil service job!!!

You are a prime example of what detached from reality looks like.

Your argument is contingent on if there were enough jobs in Bangladesh. Clearly there isn't, contrary to the picture BAL had portrayed for the economy of Bangladesh.

The SCB has already granted much of the rioters demands, they should go back to their homes and the government should hunker down now and not give an inch. I am afraid the movement has been hijacked by transnational actors- the usual sucpects.

Regards

Are you for real?

200+ people were killed and you expect things to go back to normal for your Hasina didi? Wars have started for far fewer loss of life.

There was never a need for court order - the govt has all the power. Even in the latest ruling the provision is there for the govt to change the quota. SC just reiterated that the ball was always in Govt hand.

Instead of resolving it through dialogue 3 weeks earlier, when the students requested a meeting with ministers multiple times, they were snubbed. The students then were protesting peacefully and disproportional brutal force was applied to crush their protest.

It is no longer about quota reform the moment civilian lives were lost, especially in this magnitude. Any democratic elected government of a properly functioning democracy would step down after 200+ death.

BD is not a democracy and cannot be a democracy as otherwise we will have chaos.

Hasina messed up for sure but there is no other option now but her.

We can talk about democracy in the 2030s when BD has developed a bit more and the population is more educated.

BD economy is facing massive challenges due to twin Covid-19 and Ukraine war issues. The economy will still be weak for some more time as these are finally filtered out of the picture. Yes corruption and incompetence did not help but they are minor in the big picture of the economy.

Both Jamaat and BNP has officially declared to continue this protest to have Hasina step down.

After 200+ deaths, only fools can expect things to go back to normalcy.

Everyone is aware of that and tolerated her for several years. Hasina's only saving grace was economy.

But as I have told you before, Bangladeshi economic growth is not sustainable given the ginormous amount of corruption by BAL members and affiliates. When you hear stories of govt office drivers being multi-millionaire, Hasina's personal assistant having USD 40 million+ net worth, it makes you wonder the billions looted by the big fishes.

BD economy is a borrowed economy. You keep on believing the global impact narrative, it's on you. Sure there was the global impact, but if you don't take the non-economic factors like corruption into account, you are not being honest with your assessment.

If BD economy was in such good shape - these students would not have been fighting over govt. jobs. You have to feel the pulse of the people on the ground. I am not sure if you have relatives back home, but if you do you will know that people are not exactly living the 2K+ per capita income Hasina keeps bragging about.

2K per capita is really low and does not create enough jobs just like we see in India.

UK is importing 100,000s of thousands of Indian "students" every year and they are also in other countries like Canada. They come as there are no jobs in India.

Like I already said BD economy is not in great shape due mainly to twin-effects of Covid-19 and Ukraine war. Corruption and incompetence just adds to the problems but not a major factor.

Not good for BD'shis right now but lots of other countries are suffering as well and not just the poor ones.

Hasina needs to share the pie more fairly and hope she now understands that providing too many quota jobs to "freedom fighters" is a non-starter.

This is no longer about students or political parties. It's about rescue BD from Mafia thugs and return it to back to people.

Hasina and her cronies with their loud mouth keep on putting out outrageous statements. Latest comes from the education minister who is claiming one of the first martyr Abu Sayid was a drug addict, that's why he was protesting. Such blatant lie, he was the only university educated amongst his 10 siblings and came from a very poor family. He had every right to protest against the discriminatory quota.

The death of Abu Sayid literally sparked the revolution and rallied the whole nation. And these inhumane BAL party members continue to run their loud mouth and now attempting to malign a martyr.

The real reason: The Hasina govt is unable to maximize the limited resources to meet the growing material and cultural needs of the people of Bangladesh.

Since the start of the rate hike cycle in March 2022, the Federal Reserve has raised interest rates more than a dozen times in a row. As a result of the strong dollar, many countries have seen their currencies depreciate rapidly, their foreign exchange dry up, their debt soar and their economies hit hard. In particular, South Asian countries, including Bangladesh, have been the most severely affected.

Bangladesh is a small country with a large population and an excessively high population growth rate, and Bangladeshis suffer from low employment all year round. And the dollar interest rate hike cycle has amplified the pain of Bangladeshis even more. The inability of the Hasina government to meet the demands of the Bengali people for jobs and incomes has led to riots.
